I hired Joan about 8 years ago into Novartis, but it seems like we knew each other much longer. She was invaluable to me in her role, due to her skills and knowledge. I soon realized that Joan was somewhat of a character. She was definitely one of those people I was happy to see when I came into the office. We quickly became more than just a co-workers as we always shared stories about families. She made the mistake of telling me she hated being called Joanie, which of course, I used whenever I wanted to get a rise out of her. We kept in touch after she left, so I was well aware of the tough time she had over the last several years. When we spoke she always showed that spirit and her inquisitive nature. I will miss her dearly. May she rest in peace.

I interviewed Joan when she first applied for a summer internship at Novartis. We struck it off right away. She had a great sense of humor and was so intelligent. She brought both her backgrounds in computer science and librarian science to the job, as well as her determination to solve problems. Over the years, she was also a great support system during my family’s difficult times. Her generosity of spirit was unlimited. Her love of family, especially her daughter, was also obvious. She was very proud of her daughter’s accomplishments and character. She will be missed.

So sorry to hear and condolences to her family. I literally sat next to Joan at Novartis and we had a lot of good chats. She was a special colleague and friend. LeeAnn Shiveley
