Obituary of Robert Brenn Windhorst, Jr.
Robert Brenn Windhorst, Jr. of Greenbrook, NJ, passed away at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ, on Monday, May 22, 2023, at the age of 69. Bob was born in Summit, NJ, to Robert B. Windhorst, Sr., and Lois P. Hume on February 27, 1954.
Growing up down the road from Watchung Riding Stables in the Watching Reservation, Bob developed an interest in horses and riding. He started riding lessons while attending Jefferson Elementary School. After his family moved to Warren, NJ, he got his first horse and joined the Trail Blazer 4-H. He competed in horse shows sponsored by 4-H and Watchung Riding Stable for Dressage and Hunter. As a teenager, Bob started competing at a more competitive level at local horse shows.
While at Watchung Regional High School, Bob joined the AV club. Through the AV club, he developed an interest in AV equipment (which extended to different electronics) and stage lighting. Bob enjoyed being a part of the stage crew for the high school plays, managing the stage lighting and sound. As an adult, Bob became involved with the Villagers Theatre group in Somerset, NJ, in 2012.
Over his career, Bob worked for Kent Bus Company, Melni Bus Service, which was purchased by National Bus Company, then Laidlaw, and now First Student. He started as a driver and worked his way to becoming a manager. Bob became the go-to person at work for IT assistance. Developed several programs to help make everyday work easier for his co-workers. Bob semi-retired in 2020 and became a clerk. Throughout his career, he loved driving the school buses. Bob was a certified massage therapist for 15-plus years and started his own part-time business. As the demand increased from his full-time job, Bob let the massage business go.
Bob was beloved by his family, friends, and co-workers. Bob had an infectious smile and a kind heart. He was generous and willing to help others. We will miss his quick-witted banter, sense of humor, and sarcastic comments.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents: Robert and Lois Windhorst.
He is survived by his brother, William Windhorst (Helen), sister, Penelope Wiggins (Rex), 3 nieces, 4 nephews, 9 great-nieces, and 6 great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 4, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung, NJ.
