Obituary of Ann M. Coons
Ann M. Coons, age 103, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, July 2, 2023, in her home in North Plainfield, NJ. She was born Anna Marie Macchia in Jersey City, NJ, on October 4, 1919.
She was the second youngest of 10 children and attended All Saints School and Lincoln High School. She then followed her dream to become a fashion designer when she was accepted into the prestigious Traphagen School of Design in New York City. There her creative powers flourished, and her wedding dress design was featured on the cover of the school’s “Fashion Digest.” After graduating, she worked as a sample maker at Abe Shrader Dress Company. To assist in the war effort, she worked nights on the assembly line at RCA in 1944. She was also an exquisite seamstress, making clothes from her own designs for family and friends.
She met her future husband, Harold Coons, across the backyard fence where he would spend school vacations with his relatives who lived next door to the Macchias. They were married at All Saints Church in 1948, Ann wearing the white silk wedding dress she designed and made herself.
They moved to North Plainfield in 1962.
Harold passed away in 2000 at age 80.
Ann was an animal lover and introduced her daughter to the beautiful Irish setter breed. She then went on to have three loving rat and toy fox terriers who were devoted to her.
Ann is survived by her two daughters, Joanne Coons Kosloff of PA and FL, and Lorraine Coons of PA, as well as her nieces, Annabelle Bittone, Barbara DiVentuto, Louise Macchia, and nephews Patrick Fittipaldi, Richard, and Robert Macchia.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 10, 2023, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 41 Manning Avenue, North Plainfield, NJ. Interment will follow at Holy Name Cemetery, 823 West Side Avenue, Jersey City, NJ.
