Joseph Wing

Obituary of Joseph Wing

Joseph Wing, 99, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2023. Born in Springfield, MA, he later moved to Manhattan, NY, during his formative years. After marrying, Joseph and his wife, Theresa, settled in a home they built in Ardsley, NY. In 1999, they relocated to Bridgewater to be closer to their beloved granddaughter, Katie.

Joseph wore many hats in his life. A proud veteran, he served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Stationed on the Island of Tinian in the Mariana Islands, he undertook the role of a right rear gunner on a B-29 Fighter. Flying in over 25 missions over Japan, he had the distinct honor of accompanying the Enola Gay as part of its escort squadron. From December 1942 to November 1945, Joseph's exemplary service was recognized with several medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and the Asia and Pacific Service Medal. Throughout his later years, he cherished sharing tales of his military experiences with loved ones.

Post his military service, Joseph committed two decades (1952-1972) to the New York City Police Department, culminating in his promotion to detective. Subsequently, he served as an investigator under New York Attorney General Bob Abrams, playing a pivotal role in apprehending individuals involved in pyramid schemes. Joseph then ventured into private investigation for insurance companies, curbing fraud, and worked in security at the Rockefeller Estate and safeguarding celebrities like Katherine Hepburn and Jack Nicklaus. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish J&T Construction with his wife, Theresa, constructing and renovating homes in the Westchester area.

A passionate outdoorsman, Joseph introduced his family to the joys of hunting in places like the Catskills and Western NJ. He was a talented cook and enjoyed preparing game dishes and Asian cuisine for family and friends.  He was a member of the SCFGPA, American Legion, and the Somerville Elks.

In his downtime, Joseph reveled in classic westerns and police dramas. He had an affinity for cigars and a penchant for sweets, a trait lovingly inherited by his granddaughter, Katie.

Joseph was predeceased by his sister Katherine.  His legacy lives on through his devoted wife of 68 years, Theresa; daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Mark; daughter Marcia; son Mark and his wife Sharon; and his grandchildren. He is also beloved by his many nieces and nephews and, of course, his dog, Sammy.

To have known Joe was to know firsthand that mankind is capable of selflessness, optimism, love, and kindness. He is already deeply missed.
