Obituary of Smita Mody
In the embrace of her loving family, Smita Mody, 78, took her peaceful leave on her birthday, August 31, 2023, at home in Mendham, New Jersey. Born in the vibrant city of Mumbai, India, Smita's journey began alongside her devoted husband, Vinay Mody. They ventured together to New York in the 1960s, and by the dawn of the 1970s, Richland, Washington became their home. As years flowed and their children grew, they settled in Old Bridge, NJ in 1990 and later in Parlin in 2000, cherishing two memorable decades there. The call of family love drew them to live in Mendham with their son and his family.
With a bachelor's degree under her belt, Smita dedicated her life to uplifting others. Her compassion shone when she served at the School for the Blind and continued to glow during her tenure as a social worker in Washington at a group home for developmentally disabled adults. Her mission of benevolence persisted in Old Bridge, where she worked with Easter Seals.
Smita’s creative nature was always present, manifesting in her passions for drawing and stained glass creations. Films, music, and dance sprinkled joy in her life, but the real zest came from taking long walks, cooking, and enjoying delightful meals with her family and friends. Their presence, their laughter, their stories — these were her treasures.
Smita is predeceased by her eldest son, Viral Mody, who departed in 2020 following a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.
Smita's legacy of love is carried forward by her husband, Vinay Mody, her partner for more than 60 years and husband for nearly 52 years, their son Neil Mody, his wife Joan, and their three grandchildren: Nina, Serena, and Rohan.
