Obituary of Maureen F. Washington

Maureen F. (née McCreesh) Washington, 75, of Barnegat, NJ, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 9, 2023, surrounded by her loving family, faith, and traditional Celtic music.

Born in January 1948 in Plainfield, NJ, she was the beloved daughter of the late Bernard and Mary McCreesh.  Her husband of 37 years and the love of her life, Richard Washington, passed away on February 18, 2014.  Before moving to Barnegat, they resided in Plainfield and Middlesex, NJ.

Maureen graduated from Plainfield High School in 1966.  She later worked for Allstate Insurance Company, retiring in 2007, with over 40 years of service.

Proud of her Irish heritage, she visited Ireland several times and was a former member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.  She and Rich honorably marched in the City of Newark and New York City St. Patrick’s Day parades many times.  Additionally, Maureen was an avid Jets fan and former season ticket holder.  For decades, she rooted on both Jets and Mets sports teams.

In addition to all things Irish and local sports teams, Maureen enthusiastically explored the globe alongside Rich.  They frequently cruised the seas, exploring Europe, Asia, the Americas, Canada, Australia, and the Caribbean.  Her most precious times, though, were moments spent with Rich and her family, especially the younger children of two generations.  She was a beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and great-aunt to both the McCreesh and Washington clans.  She leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews, along with their children, whom she treasured.

Surviving are her four siblings, Brian McCreesh and his wife Carolyn, of Wall Township, NJ; Gail Skidmore of Bayville, NJ; Terrance McCreesh and Dottie Ewing of South Plainfield, NJ; and Karen Bailey and her husband George of Allentown, PA.

She was predeceased by her sister Patricia Reilly and family of Warrenton, VA; Thomas McCreesh and family of South Plainfield, NJ; and Bernie McCreesh and family of Calabash, NC.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ.  A mass will be held on Monday, September 18, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Stony Hill R.C. Church, 225 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ.  Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Maureen’s memory to Team Bernie McCreesh, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity dedicated to oral cancer treatment, education, and research at www.TeamBernieMcCreesh.com.
