I just found out Joe passed away from our Oratory Prep alumni rep. He was such a nice guy. I was going to remind him of this incident when I found out Joe left us but memories of him have not. .
Spring of 1961 teacher John burn started a track team at oratory . I believe Joe market was the only senior. Therefore John burn made him captain .He never placed (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in any event. But he made every practice , meet & held his head high as a leader would .
The last dual meet I saw John burn get Joe aside and tell him something . The start of the race (880 or mile ) Joe sprinted in front of everyone and had a big lead . He held that lead for most of the race but 2 opposing runners eventually caught up to him & passed him but he got 3 rd.
SUCCESS!
Miss you Joe. We will see each other in the next life .

Markert Family,
My deep condolences for your loss. Joe was a fellow professor when I joined the Rutgers faculty in 2008, and we had adjacent offices for a while. Many times, we would chat in each other's offices, and grab a bite to eat at the cafeteria in the Newark building before our evening classes. He was so helpful and generous, and I learned so much from him. May he rest in peace.

During my time at Rutgers, I had the privilege of taking two courses with Mr. Markert. His kindness and unwavering support for students were truly exceptional. Beyond the classroom, his invaluable guidance continues to shape my career. I'm profoundly grateful for his mentorship and the significant impact it's had on my journey. Going to miss him so much.

As a long-time colleague of Joe's at Rutgers Business School, I always appreciated his willingness to help, to share, to support, and to be available whenever needed for his students, colleagues, and the staff. Joe was always cheerful and went out of his way to enhance the academic experience for our students across our campuses. He will be missed. May the family find comfort in good memories. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Markert was a wonderful person who centered his life around his family. He was always so fun and engaging, full of interests, passions, and the ongoing pursuit of knowledge. He was such a dear family friend who always made everyone around him feel wanted and that they belonged. I will always remember how he taught me how to ski during a family ski trip at his beloved log cabin in Vermont. God bless him and the Markert family at this time. Much love, Lisa Routel
