Dr. David Jieh-Shyh Tsai, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023.
Born in Chiayi City, Taiwan, in 1952, David grew up in Taipei and moved to the United States in 1977 to embark on a new adventure. He first spent time on the West Coast in Washington and California, before heading east to New Jersey, where he settled down in Warren and called home for 31 years.
David's academic journey took him from Tamkang University in Taipei to Washington State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry. He then completed postdoctoral research at the University of California, Riverside.
David's passion for chemistry led him to Schering-Plough (now part of Merck), where he worked as a research scientist for 24 years and received 11 patents. After retiring in 2008, he continued to share his expertise and experience as a pharmaceutical consultant.
In his spare time, David cherished spending time with friends and family. He could often be found at the local tennis courts or table tennis center, actively playing and socializing. He had a soft spot for bakeries and barbeque and loved nothing more than sharing meals with those he loved. David also found joy in treasure hunting at estate sales.
David is survived by his wife of 42 years, Liy-Huei Tsai; daughter Crystal Kao and her husband, Joseph Kao; son James Tsai; grandson Ryan Kao; and granddaughter Brianna Kao.
To honor and remember David, a gathering will be held on Sunday, November 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, New Jersey. A memorial service will follow at 12:30 p.m.
