Obituary of Rocco Douglas Rodden

Rocco Douglas Rodden: A Celebration of a Bright Life Cut Short

Rocco Douglas Rodden, aged 17, tragically passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023, at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Born in Summit and a lifelong resident of Warren, Rocco was a remarkable young man whose life, though brief, was marked by extraordinary warmth, compassion, and a deep sense of loyalty to his family and friends.

A standout junior at St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, Rocco was not just academically gifted but also a passionate football player. As the starting Left Guard on the O Line, he was celebrated by coaches and peers alike for his leadership, both on and off the field. His radiant smile, a beacon of positivity, and his magnetic personality made him a figure that others naturally gravitated toward. They nicknamed him “Cug” because he treated everyone like a cousin or a true brother. Everyone loved this child who touched so many individuals from all walks of life.

Beyond the football field, Rocco was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, having started his own car detailing business, Balboa Detailing. While others basked in the sun, he chose to detail boats. His work ethic at such a young age was remarkable and recognized by so many. He appreciated the finer things in life but understood the value of hard work and earning his rewards. He also worked winters in his family’s business, DCR Companies. He navigated backhoes, skid steers, excavators, and paving equipment. It all came so naturally to Rocco. He was looking forward to driving the snowplow this year, after finally getting his driving license.

Growing up in a tight-knit Italian family, his love for a hearty meal was no surprise - particularly a plate of pasta paired with a well-cooked steak. This was well known among those who knew him best.

Rocco cherished his summers at the family home in Lavallette, NJ, where he enjoyed the shore's serene beauty. The thrill of riding his jet ski was his favorite and he shared those memories with friends who became pseudo brothers and sisters; Kyle, Alex, Jr. Robert, Lucas, Vin, Will, Monte, JoJo, John, Stigs, Cev, Kevin, Luke, Brendan, Jayden, Jake, Gerald, Joey, Nikki, Julianna, Raegan, Jules, Gabriella, Victoria, Bella, Melina, Alyssa, Giovanna, Julianna, Nicholas, and Josh to name a few. Their love and bond was unbreakable.

He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, a contagiously bright smile, and a life characterized by a profound sense of caring, compassion, and the utmost loyalty. A true warrior, the light of the darkest room, the eye of the tiger.

He is survived by his beloved mother, Angelina Chillemi, his father, Douglas C. Rodden, brothers Dominick and Anthony, and loving sister Gianna. His grandparents Michelina and Tony Chillemi (Nonna and Nonno) and Arlene and Kenneth Kusmick (Nanny and Pop Pop), aunts and uncles Onofrio and Antonella Chillemi, Dawn and Brian Haskell, cousins Michael, Melissa, Luca and Mason and other countless cousins and special heartbroken friends also mourn his loss.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Stirling, NJ. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday at the church at 10 am, followed by the entombment at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.

The funeral mass livestream will be available at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2023, and will be held at St. Vincent de Paul R.C. Church, 250 Bebout Avenue, Stirling, NJ.
