Hugh Alejandro Chavez, 57, departed this life on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. A native of El Salvador, Hugh relocated to Plainfield, New Jersey, when he was 13 and later settled in North Plainfield over three decades ago. There, with his beloved wife Silvia, he nurtured and raised their family.
Known for his unwavering dedication and strong work ethic, Hugh was esteemed as the head custodian of the Plainfield Public School System, a role he embraced with immense pride. His career spanned over two decades, including 15 years with the North Plainfield Board of Education, followed by 8 years with the Plainfield Board.
A faithful member of the Iglesia Presbiteriana Nuevas Fronteras Church, Hugh had diverse interests. He was an avid cook, a lover of movies which he often enjoyed with Silvia, and a passionate soccer enthusiast, ardently supporting Barcelona and idolizing Lionel Messi. His love for soccer extended to playing the game during weekends and holidays. A fan of the NY Giants, Hugh's Sundays were often spent watching the games, sometimes involving his family in the excitement. Traveling was another of his joys, with a special fondness for visiting his homeland, El Salvador. Above all, Hugh deeply valued the moments spent with his family and friends.
He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Silvia Chavez; their children, Jennie Chavez and her husband, Moises Ardon, Amy Ascencio and her husband, Daniel Ascencio, and Alejandro Chavez; a granddaughter, Ariana Chavez; parents Ana Chavez and Julio Chavez Sr. and a brother, Julio Chavez. Hugh's absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew him.
