Obituary of Michael R. Elia

Michael R. Elia, aged 82, of Warren, New Jersey, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at Overlook Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Michael spent his early years there before moving to North Plainfield, where he would later graduate from North Plainfield High School. His journey led him to Warren, New Jersey, in 1987, where he continued to live and cherish the community.

Michael's passion for creativity and style led him to pursue a career in hairdressing, training at a cosmetology school. His dedication and love for his craft culminated in the successful operation of Michael Richards, Inc. in Union and Springfield, New Jersey. His career, spanning many years until his retirement 15 years ago, was not merely a profession but a source of joy and fulfillment, marked by the warm relationships he forged with his clients.

Michael's life was rich in interests and activities. He was a devout member of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Stirling, New Jersey, having formerly been a part of Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield. His enthusiasm for harness racing saw him owning several standardbred racehorses, competing at notable tracks like the Meadowlands and Monticello, a passion ignited through his son's involvement in the sport.

His commitment to fitness reflected his belief in the importance of physical well-being. Michael was also an avid car enthusiast, always appreciating the beauty and craftsmanship of fine vehicles. His love for Atlantic City was evident in his enjoyment of its games, dining, and entertainment, always engaging with the city's vibrancy in a manner that spoke to his zest for life.

Michael's life was a tapestry of joy, love, and cherished moments, despite the sorrow of losing his son, Michael John Elia, in 1995. His legacy continues through his beloved family and the many lives he touched.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Lucille A. Elia, and their devoted son Christopher and his fiancée Kathleen Yates. Also mourning his passing is his daughter-in-law, Angela Nigro. His granddaughter, Gianna, whom he adored, remains a testament to his legacy of love.  Further extending his family circle are his sister, Barbara A. Anderson, and her husband Robert; nieces Danielle Awadalla and her husband Sam, Heather Anderson DeRocco and her fiancé David Nissel; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who all shared in the joy and warmth of his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Leukemia Foundation, honoring Michael's compassionate spirit.

Michael R. Elia's journey through life was marked by his love for others, his passionate pursuits, and the indelible impact he left on those fortunate enough to know him. His memory will be cherished and celebrated by all whose lives he touched.
