Irene was a wonderful mother in law to me and an incredible Grandma to my 3 daughters. When she would visit, the entire burden of the household was lifted from me. She would cheerfully and seemingly effortlessly take over the kitchen, sending wonderful aromas wafting through the house of chocolate chip cookies, and poppy seed/walnut rolls--the latter courtesy of her Eastern European heritage. She also filled the freezer full of pierogies and other goodies. Meanwhile, the gardens got weeded, some deep cleaning would get done, but she still had time to play card games with the kids. No wonder we all shouted with glee when Grandma and Grandpa would arrive for a 1-2 week visit. She will be sorely missed
