Obituary of David L. Santos
David L. Santos, 64, of Hillsborough, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024, after a valiant battle with illness. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Augusto and Ilda Santos, David's zest for life and strength of character were evident from an early age. He graduated from Roselle Catholic High School and furthered his education at Paul Smith’s College of Arts and Sciences, where he earned an associate's degree in applied science on May 31, 1981.
David's adventurous spirit led him to Utah, where he served as a forest firefighter. In this role, David not only fought wildfires but also donned the Smoky Bear costume to teach children about fire prevention. His commitment to the community was paralleled by his personal achievements, including completing an Outward Bound course—a rigorous outdoor survival program that emphasizes teamwork and personal growth.
Returning to New Jersey, David settled in Edison before moving to Hillsborough in 1999, where he continued to live until his passing. He embarked on a distinguished 37-year career at PSEG, retiring as a Project Manager of Asset Engineering. His professional accolades were numerous, but it was his personal interests that brought him the most joy. An avid outdoorsman, David cherished hiking, fishing, and especially trips to Lake Placid in the Adirondacks, where he and his family vacationed annually. Golfing, memorable vacations to Jamaica and Mexico, his days playing youth soccer, and his days as a youth runner were among his favorite pursuits.
David's love for animals was profound. From his childhood dog, Snoopy, and his cat, Cali, to his cherished pets, Luna and Stella, his companions were a constant source of joy and comfort.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Cindy Santos; his son, Steve Santos; siblings, Denise Pocius (Jerry), Doreen Frantz (Ken), and Dennis Santos (Dawn); and his adoring pets. David's legacy is one of passion, dedication, and boundless love for both family and nature.
Visitation will be held on both Wednesday, May 29, 2024, from 4 PM to 8 PM, and on Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 10 AM to 10:45 AM at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. A memorial service will follow on Thursday at 11 AM at the funeral home. Cremation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the American Cancer Society, or the American Liver Foundation.
David's light and spirit will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
