MESSAGE
FRANCES S. MONJE
Good afternoon or good evening to all in the United States. Good morning to all from Quezon City, Philippines.
I am Frances S. Monje, sister of Dr. Bartolome S. Monje, Jr. who we call Tony. I am the 4th of us five siblings: Marietta, Quirico, Rudolfo, myself, and Tony, our youngest. Etched in my mind is a picture of us five siblings on the front yard of our Laoag home, when Tony was about three years old. In that picture, Tony did not join our group. He was alone caught by the camera by himself, about two feet awayfrom us, playing on the ground.
The significance of this picture dawned on me when we were already adults. Among us five, only Tony was separated from us. He left for the US with his family in 1974 to pursue his doctor’s career in New York. The three of us, my two brothers and me, live in Quezon City, while my sis, Marie, lived with her family in Laoag. Despite the far distance and long separation from him, we all remained close to him and we nurtured the love, care friendship, and camaraderiewe had as children.
Somehow, I have become the closest to him as I have been very fortunate to visit and stay with him in New York a number of times due to my work at SGV, the foremost professional services and auditing firm in the Philippines. I was able to bring my Mom twice with me to stay with him. My sister, brother, sisters-in law and brother-in-law, nieces and nephew were able to stay with him, too. Twice, I was with him a few days before Christmas.
During all these times, Tony’s generosity, kindness, joy, love and care for us shone. He would pick us up at Kennedy Airport when we arrive and bring us back for our departure. He was tireless in bringing us to savor and enjoy several beautiful sites of New York City, New Jersey, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas to name a few, despite his busy schedule. He would endearingly help us prepare our balikbayan boxes. He was patient and generous to bring us shopping even at far-flung outlets. He had faith in my driving and would liberally lend me his car.
He was a very good cook which I marveled at since he was not into this back home. He would cook for us crabs, shrimps, and sea shellsgalore. He was a gourmet. He would bring us to restaurants, of choice, that serve delicious food. What was also evident in him was his equanimity, composure, patience, and coolness in handling matters which befit him as a doctor.
The longest I stayed with him was in March to October 2001. By then I was a retired partner of SGV so could stay long with him. He was hospitalized at the Brooklyn Hospital where he worked due to complications of the unexpected burst of his appendicitis oI n his flight back to New York from Manila. He came to Laoag for the wake and funeral of our Popsy. Upon learning he was in the ICU, I immediately flew to New York to help take care of him in anyway. He was at the ICU for two months. He was a good patient and showed determination and will to get well. I also witnessed the love, care and concern for him from his fellow doctors and the nurses at the hospital.
Finally, after three months or so, he was discharged from the hospital. I stayed on to take care of him and nurture him back to good health. When he was better, we would go out driving, with me on the wheel, dining and exploring beautiful places to amuse and help him heal. I would drive him and fetch him from work at the hospital when he was back to work. We had fun and enjoyed the pleasures for the taking.
Tony, his sons, and Ces were able to visit and stay with us a few times in Laoag and Quezon City. We brought them to see beautiful sites of Ilocos Norte, Baguio, Metro Manila, and Boracay to name a few, These were happy and enjoyable days for all of us.
Tony, I will always remember and cherish all the treasured moments, events, memories, and experience we have shared with you . Through it all, you showed us your generous, loving, and caring beautiful person and soul. We are all proud of your achievements and life as a doctor.
When we heard of your ailment early this year, we fervently prayed for your healing and recovery. But God has his own ways. He didn’t want to prolong your pain and agony any further. With profound grief and a heavy heart, I bid you farewell my dearest brother, Tony.
I pray for the eternal and peaceful repose of your soul in God’s warm embrace.
We love you very much and we will forever hold you dear in our hearts.
