Obituary of Robert James Galbraith

Robert James “Jimmy” Galbraith

May 1, 1939 - August 31, 2024

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Robert James Galbraith, affectionately known as Jimmy, who died peacefully surrounded by his family at his beloved beach house in Normandy Beach. Born on May 1, 1939, in Plainfield, New Jersey, Jimmy was a long-time resident of Watchung after growing up in Plainfield and Scotch Plains.

Jimmy served honorably in the reserves for four years. He continued his father’s legacy at the West Side House Tavern in Scotch Plains, where his early work involved caring for horses in the barn behind the tavern—an experience that ignited his lifelong passion for racehorses. Together with his good friend, he owned racehorses, particularly trotters, fostering a deep connection with the racing community. He later opened The Stable Bar and Grill in 1980, which he owned until retiring from the tavern business about seven years ago. He then transitioned to building homes with his son, Mike.

A devoted member of St. Mary’s Stony Hill Church in Watchung, Jimmy’s faith was integral to his life. He was an avid gardener, known for his lush tomatoes, and a passionate hunter who enjoyed hunting with his son and grandsons.

Jimmy enjoyed quiet moments with his beloved dog, Molly, and cherished the family gatherings at his beach house. His love for travel brought him many joyful memories, especially his frequent trips to Aruba with his wife, Diane.

Jimmy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Diane, their children, Michael and his wife Nancy, Christi Lynn, Danielle Galbraith Solomon and her husband Frederick, and his grandchildren, Robert James, Thomas, Willow, and Lily. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Donald and Jodi.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Stony-Hill R.C. Church, Watchung. Cremation will follow privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, at www.guidingeyes.org, honoring Jimmy’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Jimmy will be remembered as a community pillar, a devoted husband, loving father, and doting grandfather. His legacy of love and passion for life will continue to inspire all who knew him.
