My condolences to Bob. Hartman family. I treasure working along side with Dr. Hartman for over 20 years at AT&T Bell Labs. I remember well my first day of work at Reading PA Lab where I was poking around after work in the basement laser aging facility, there I met Bob crawling on the floor trying to fix some electronics.
From that first encounter, we developed many generations of reliable semiconductor lasers & packages for undersea and terrestrial communication systems. I will also remember the special occasions of working abroad in Japan, Paris, and other locations. RIP, Bob It was an honor and pleasure to work and learn from you.

My condolences to Dr. Hartman's family. I had the honor of working with Bob as a fellow engineer and had great admiration for his intelligence but was most impressed with his ability to treat all of his colleagues with respect. Dr. Hartman was undoubtedly the smartest person in the room but his humility made us all feel like equals. He was genuine and honest and I will cherish the many qualities like these that made him the human being that he was - caring and respectful of everyone he encountered. The world lost a great scientist and engineer and I was proud to have known and worked with Dr. Hartman. Rest in peace my friend and may God bless your soul and your family.

I am very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a great scientist and engineer and was also a great human being.
I knew Bob from Bell Labs. Bob had a unique filing system for technical papers - he would stack papers on the floor of his office to a height of maybe 5 or 6 feet. Apparently, he did not have time to put them in the filing cabinet. Anyway, when you came into his office and asked a question, Bob would stare at his pile for a few seconds and then pick the right spot to pull out the appropriate paper to answer your question. Not something I had the ability to do. I learned an unbelievable amount from Bob.
My condolences to his family.

My condolences to the Hartman family. I had the pleasure of working with Bob for many years throughout my career. I first worked with Bob at Bell Labs starting in 1981. I was always amazed at his extraordinary knowledge. He was always a pleasure to talk with and was a genuinely nice person. I appreciated his guidance and mentorship over the years. Bob was a great person and will be missed by many.

My condolences to the Hartman family. I treasure the years we worked together in the 1980s to qualify and certify laser transmitters for the first fiber-optic undersea cable system. I came to appreciate Bob's brilliance and good humor on our trips to Japan. I can attest as to how highly Bob was regarded by the Japanese engineers and scientists!

I will always treasure the opportunity I had to work alongside Bob during our years together at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ and Breinigsville, PA, sharing next door offices for much of that time. His boundless enthusiasm and excitement were an inspiration to me. I also thoroughly enjoyed his sense of humor and adventure, particularly on our trips together to Europe and the Far East. My condolences to Monica, and also to Bob's sons, whom he was extremely proud of.

My sincere condolences to Bob Hartman and his family. I was hired in the same group as Bob in 1979 at Bell Labs. He taught me numerous things about lasers and allowed me to learn from his Lab. He was a wonderful person to learn from and he would answer all questions as patiently as possible. We truely lost a pioneer in laser development - Niloy Dutta

My Uncle BobUncle Bob was my second dad. Actually, he was my FUN dad. Uncle Bob really loved me like I was his child. He loved me even when he saw how mischevious I could be. He was my favorite uncle, and we shared many favorite things: ice cream, swimming, learning, bear hugs, chocolate, and the tushy on the poultry he was always carving. He was more than a “funcle”, he was my fun father.Uncle Bob gave the best bear hugs. Sometimes lifting you right up into the air. None of that nasty cheek pinching like other relatives! He was known for his bear hugs! I learned how to give those hugs so well that I once bruised Edie’s ribs… Let’s talk about Uncle Bob and chocolate!! Uncle Bob let us indulge in chocolate like no parent ever would! Whether it was Helen Elliott at Eastertime, or Godiva Chocolates in the city when he and Aunt Monica took us at Christmastime, chocolate was always part of the fun! Or was it ice cream? How could he not be my favorite uncle?!? When Edie and I slept over for the weekend, we could eat ice cream right on the living room watching TV! Maybe even seconds- nothing like your actual parent would ever allow! Growing up and visiting Grandma Margie’s house was always such a great time, and where Uncle Bob lived when he met Aunt Monica. Every dinner there, and whenever we all gathered with the newlyweds, I asked to sit between them at the table- to be as close as possible to BOTH of them. Uncle Bob told me that I could sit on either side of them, but they were in love and were going to sit together. I understood, but just loved them so much! Sometimes us 3ve siblings got into mischief at Grandma Margie’s. Once dad was yelling at Rick for something. I was behind dad making faces at Rick, as he was getting reprimanded. Uncle Bob noticed and told me he had no idea “his blond little angel” could behave that way! He still loved me anyway!
I also remember Uncle Bob could do this crazy Russian squatting kicking dance. He amazed us all in Grandma Margie’s attic doing it. We all kept trying to get it! Uncle Bob could also do an amazing trick! He would pile four quarters on the back of his hand, then toss them up in the air, catching each one right after the other. It was a feat to witness! Uncle Bob was not just full of merriment, but talented too! Did you know Uncle Bob was shot in his chest, straight through the heart, and survived? As I recall, and thanks to much great embellishment by my hero uncle himself, he healed himself and never even had to go to the hospital! I believe he said he was stopping a bank robbery from being committed... He really was an amazing guy! One of the greatest annual events was Thanksgiving on Twelve Forest Drive! More than a feast, a Hungarian poultry queen’s delight! Tables set in many rooms, Uncle Bob singing as he carved and shared the tushy with me! Children everywhere with craft supplies set up by my favorite aunt, Monica! Walks through the woods after dinner to make more room for delicious desserts! One of the best parts for me was growing up and taking my own family to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on our way to the Thanksgiving Feast of all Feasts on Forest Drive!!All such wonderful and meaningful memories!! More meaningful to me is that for my Uncle Bob, my dad, and myself- science is our instrument of knowledge. This is the legacy I hold so very dear- our background rooted in learning, understanding, and always seeking to learn more. My respect and love for Uncle Bob is felt so deeply, as he lived his life with this rooted in his essence, along with having a heart full of love. -Lori Sue Hartman Tutino, 10/10/2024

We will miss our dear friend Bob. Our friendship goes back a long time and we enjoyed the many wonderful times we spent together. Grandchildren and politics were a big topic of discussion and we will sorely miss the many dinners and great conversations we shared. We are thankful for the time we had with Bob, but we would have wished for more. Our love and condolences, Nelson and Barbara

From the moment I met Bob he welcomed me with open arms. He exuded patience, generosity, kindness, and love which without a doubt has passed on to his amazing sons David and Eddie. I’m forever grateful that I get to be apart of his legacy and carry the name Hartman. My only wish is that I would have had more time with him and that he could meet his granddaughter who is due in Jan. I am honored that I get to help bring into the world an extension of him. In the grand scheme of things my time with Bob was short but I am left with beautiful memories and the gift of calling him my father n law. You will be missed but never forgotten. Love you always
