Obituary of Richard Allen Ormsbee
February 8, 1945 – October 24, 2024
Richard Allen Ormsbee, a devoted family man, accomplished chemist, and true sports enthusiast, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024, at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey, at the age of 79. Born in Floral Park, New York, on February 8, 1945, Richard was the beloved only child of Harold and Helen Ormsbee, a role he cherished throughout his life. Growing up in Floral Park, Richard was instilled with strong values, a curious mind, and a love for the close-knit community in which he was raised. For the past 52 years, he called North Plainfield, New Jersey, his home, where he built a life filled with love, dedication, and accomplishment.
Richard graduated from Floral Park Memorial High School in 1963, and his academic pursuits led him to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1967. This solid educational foundation paved the way for a remarkable 35-year career as a research chemist, a path that he remained steadfastly devoted to from his first day until his retirement in 2002. Richard began his career at Best Foods, which later became part of CPC International and, ultimately, Unilever. Working in Somerset, New Jersey, he was deeply committed to his role, exemplifying loyalty and expertise that saw him through various transitions as the company evolved. His work touched many well-known products, including Skippy peanut butter, Hellman’s mayonnaise, and Mazola corn oil, which were staples in households across the country.
Richard was an Emeritus member of the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS), an esteemed professional organization for experts in fats, oils, and related materials. Not only did his work take him around the globe, allowing him to share his knowledge with colleagues worldwide, enriching his life and making him an exceptional storyteller, it also was where he found his heart’s greatest joy. While working at Best Foods, Richard met the love of his life, Irene Thomas. Their first date was a sunny day at Jones Beach, a day so perfect that it sparked a lifelong romance. The two were married on August 12, 1972, at Saint Joseph’s Church in Roselle, New Jersey, embarking on a marriage that would flourish through shared laughter, mutual respect, and a love that only deepened with time.
At home, Richard was a man of varied interests, but one of his favorite traditions was celebrating his German heritage with his family. Every year on his birthday, the Ormsbee household would be filled with the delicious aromas of sauerbraten, red cabbage, and potato dumplings — a meal he eagerly looked forward to, surrounded by those he loved. In addition, his dedication to his vegetable garden was a source of pride and joy. With patience and a careful hand, he nurtured a vibrant garden season after season, sharing his harvest with neighbors and friends, embodying the simple beauty of growing and giving.
When it came to sports, Richard’s passion was unmatched. He was a lifelong fan of the Mets, Jets, Rangers, and Knicks, steadfastly supporting these teams with unwavering loyalty despite the long championship droughts they faced. His dedication to these teams was a source of both joy and resilience, as he embraced each season with renewed hope. Not only did he follow the games closely, but he was also deeply involved in fantasy sports leagues, managing multiple teams and actively participating in three softball leagues in his younger days. Whether watching from the stands, tracking fantasy scores, or playing on the field, sports brought immense enjoyment and energy to Richard’s life.
Richard's devotion to his family was paramount, a love that transcended all else. He adored watching his daughters play softball and never missed a chance to attend his grandchildren's sporting events, proudly cheering them on from the sidelines. His wife Irene fondly recalls their annual trips to Cape May, where countless memories were made along the shore. His laughter, stories, and steadfast presence created a legacy of love that will endure in the hearts of his loved ones. His daughter’s dog, Finn, also held a special place in his heart, bringing joy to his days and becoming yet another cherished member of his beloved family.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Irene Ormsbee; his two devoted daughters, Sandy Hogenauer and her husband Bill, and Sharon Ficacci and her husband Mike; and his seven beloved grandchildren: Kendall, Will, Jack, Sloan, Stevie, Michael, and Sienna. Each one of them carries forward a part of his spirit, strength, and endless love.
In addition to his devotion to family and work, Richard enjoyed quieter hobbies that reflected his thoughtful nature, including his love for reading, puzzles like Sudoku, and even games like Candy Crush, which kept his mind sharp and engaged. His life was a tapestry woven with kindness, intellect, and an undeniable zest for every role he took on—whether as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, or dedicated employee.
