Obituary of Alice Carolyn Kyrioglou

Alice Carolyn Kyrioglou (née Bugle)
December 23, 1938 – November 3, 2024

Alice Carolyn Kyrioglou, 85, passed away early on November 3, 2024, at her home in Warren, New Jersey, with her husband by her side.  Born on December 23, 1938, in Newark, New Jersey, to Edwin and Mary Bugle, Alice grew up in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, alongside her siblings Edwin, Mary, and Gloria.

Alice attended Scotch Plains High School and began working as a teenager at Melon King, a popular local spot frequented by New York Yankees players. It was there that she met her future husband, William Kyrioglou. Although they didn’t marry right away, they kept in touch while William served in the Army, with their connection strengthening over time. After high school, Alice worked as a stenographer for Stavid Engineering, which later became part of Lockheed.

Upon William’s return from overseas, Alice and William married in August 1960 at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Newark, honeymooning in Bermuda. They shared a devoted marriage of 64 years, raising their four children together. Initially residing in Fanwood, New Jersey, they later settled in Warren, where they created lasting memories with family & friends.

For nearly 15 years, Alice worked as an executive assistant with Chubb & Son Insurance.  Beyond her career, Alice’s greatest joy came from being with her family and friends.

Alice was the heart of her family, especially during the holidays, when she hosted large Thanksgiving gatherings, sometimes with as many as 35 guests. Known for her culinary skills, she prepared traditional bread and rice stuffing that became a cherished family favorite. Though not Greek herself, she enjoyed learning Greek cooking from her mother- and sisters-in-law, blending these recipes with Slovak dishes from her own background.

In her free time, Alice enjoyed a variety of hobbies including dabbling in painting. She also played tennis, Mahjong, poker, and Scrabble and was a member of a bowling league, where her friendly competitive spirit shone. She delighted in attending flea markets and garage sales, often hosting her own and sharing her finds with her family.  An avid gardener, Alice tended to her flower gardens and houseplants, cultivating beautiful blooms like peonies, daffodils, and purple irises.  Her love extended to animals, especially the rescue dogs that became a cherished part of her and her children's homes over the years.

While not an avid traveler, Alice cherished memories of trips to Bermuda, Niagara Falls, the Jersey shore, and visits to Colorado and Washington, D.C., to spend time with her sons. She especially grew to love Colorado, admiring its natural beauty, and took great joy in being with her family wherever they were.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Mary Bugle, and her siblings Edwin, Mary, and Gloria. She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, William, along with their children: William, Michael, Joanne, and Lisa, who will carry forward her legacy of kindness and humor.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Alice’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Warren Township Rescue Squad, a local animal shelter, or a charity of your choice.
