Obituary of Robert Anton Leidner
Robert Anton Leidner, 89, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Born on February 5, 1935, in Ridgewood, New York, where he spent his childhood, before moving to Oceanside, Long Island in 1949. A graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, Robert's passion for innovation and creativity led him to a distinguished career as a patent draftsman at Bell Labs, in Manhattan, New York City, where he was involved with invention of many technological advances. In 1964, after the Manhattan offices closed, he moved to Basking Ridge with his family, to continue his employment with Bell Labs in Murray Hill and then Whippany, New Jersey. He also pursued his love for woodworking as the owner and operator of Fine Custom Cabinets in Basking Ridge, where his craftsmanship and artistry brought lifelong customers and friendships. Later in life he took up wood carving and was very proud of the many birds that he carved.
Robert dutifully served in the United States Army during the Korean War, demonstrating his pride and responsibility to service and country.
Robert was a Catholic and a longtime parishioner of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Basking Ridge. His faith was an important part of his life.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Leidner, in 2009; his daughter, Susan, in 2023; and his brother, George in 2007.
Robert is survived by his loving children: Eileen Mac Kenzie and her husband, John; Anton "Tony" Leidner; Patricia "Patty" Leidner; and Robert “Rob” Leidner and his wife, Linda. He was grandfather to 9 amazing grandchildren: Jason, Sarah, Erin, Anna, Amy, Anton, David, Philip, and Emily. He is also survived by his dear sister, Rosemarie Leitenberger, and many extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Mount Church, 170 Mount Bethel Rd., Warren, NJ 07059. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Basking Ridge, NJ.
Robert’s legacy of hard work, determination, dedication and ironic sense of humor will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him.
