Obituary of Mary Louise Moore
Mary Louise Moore, 87, of North Plainfield, NJ, passed away on November 21, 2024, in her home, surrounded by family and love. Mary was born at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, NJ, on July 3, 1937, to Mary Dow, who died only weeks after giving birth to her and Nathaniel Boykin. Mary grew up to become the most loving, caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother that any child could ever ask for. She will forever be missed, and her passing leaves an unfillable void, for she was one of a kind.
Mary spent her early years living in Westfield, NJ, before moving to Brooklyn, NY. She attended Brooklyn College and worked for the IRS. For the past few years, she worked as a poll worker during elections. She also possessed a strong sense of patriotism that was deeply rooted in her family’s legacy of service, as both her father and husband were military men. Their influence instilled in her a profound love for her country and a deep respect for those who served it.
As a mother of six children, Mary’s greatest joy in life was her family. She also loved to cook and bake. She was known for making the best fried chicken on the block and giving the most fun and entertaining birthday parties and holiday gatherings for family and friends.
Mary returned to New Jersey in the 1980s, living in Plainfield for almost 30 years. She has been front and center at Plainfield’s annual 4th of July parade for nearly two decades, becoming a local celebrity. The parade will not be the same without her.
Mary was not afraid to speak her mind, and she had a kind sense of humor and a special way of making everyone feel valued and loved, no matter who they were. She always wanted to make sure that everyone had food to eat and clothes to put on. Speaking of clothes, she was highly skilled in putting together a stylish, coordinated outfit. Last but certainly not least was Mary’s love of scratch-offs. She was in her glory when she had a stack of Crosswords or Big Money Spectaculars.
Mary is predeceased by both of her parents, her husband Larry, loving partner Jubert (James), her son Zachary, her brother Sonny, and grandsons Houston and James, Jr. She is survived by her four daughters - Linda, Veldora, Dolores, and Lisa; her son Cameron; grandchildren - Bevon, Toshiba, Chauncey, Jibraiyl, Halima, Nekaybaw, Domineek, Sheron, and Sharena, and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She will be remembered not only as the lively matriarch of her family but also as a shining example of unconditional love and strength.
A celebration of Mary’s extraordinary life will be held at Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung, NJ, on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. The viewing will be from 9 to 11 a.m., and the service will begin at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, NJ.
Mary’s legacy of laughter, love, and giving will live on in the hearts of her family and all those who were blessed to have her in their lives.
