Marilyn Stephanie Moore
November 18, 1956 – November 19, 2024
Marilyn Stephanie Moore, 68, of Plainfield, New Jersey, passed away at Overlook Medical Center in Summit on November 19, 2024. Born on November 18, 1956, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Herman Sr. and Evelyn Whitehurst, Marilyn grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn before relocating to Plainfield in 1993, where she resided for the remainder of her life.
A dedicated nurse and lifelong learner, Marilyn graduated from Lehman College in the Bronx, New York, earning her degree in nursing in 1990. She began her distinguished career as an operating room nurse at Beth Israel Medical Center, where she worked diligently for over 34 years, retiring in 2024. Marilyn was deeply passionate about her work in the medical field, and her dedication extended beyond the operating room. She began consulting for medical companies, lending her extensive experience to improve medical devices used in surgical procedures. Marilyn also served as a charge nurse and trained new nurses with the same compassion she displayed with her patients. Marilyn was also working on a novel about the medical field at the time of her passing, a project her family hopes to publish in her honor.
In addition to her career, Marilyn had a creative and entrepreneurial spirit. She ran a successful Poshmark business, specializing in Coach handbags and accessories. She was a woman of many talents and passions, recently learning to swim—something she had always dreamed of mastering.
Marilyn will be remembered for her elegance and poise. She took great pride in her appearance and enjoyed having her hair, nails, and makeup done. Despite her many accomplishments, the true love of her life was her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a devoted grandmother, always willing to lend a helping hand to her daughter and relishing every moment spent with her grandchildren. She was a generous and fierce protector of all those she loved. Her unwavering faith compelled her to stand up for what was right, even when it was hard.
Marilyn is survived by her beloved daughter, Chassidy Moore, and her partner, Lamonte Thornton; her cherished grandchildren, Alexis and Nicole Thornton; her siblings, Lisa Whitehurst-Wright and her husband Kevin; her sister Dale and her brothers Herman Jr. and Melvin Whitehurst. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, including Melvin Jr., Faith, Zarek, and Daniel.
Funeral services for Marilyn will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. The visitation will take place from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at noon. Cremation services will be held privately.
Marilyn’s unwavering dedication to her profession, entrepreneurial drive, and deep love for her family will leave an enduring legacy. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. We are comforted knowing she is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
