Lawrence Sobel

Obituary of Lawrence Sobel

March 10, 1935 – December 14, 2024

Lawrence Sobel, a man known for his unwavering work ethic, love for family, and joyful approach to life, passed away peacefully at his home in Long Hill, New Jersey, surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 14, 2024. He was 89 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 10, 1935, Lawrence was the son of the late Mortimer and Gertrude Sobel. He spent his formative years in Brooklyn, where his legendary work ethic began early as a young boy delivering newspapers. Customers quickly recognized his reliability and integrity, often seeking him out for their routes or other odd jobs. This foundation of hard work and commitment remained a defining trait throughout his life.

After proudly serving his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, Lawrence resided in several communities, then settled in Clifton, New Jersey. In 2019, he moved to Long Hill, where he spent the remainder of his life.

Lawrence’s professional life was centered in the HVAC industry, where his skills and leadership earned him the respect of colleagues and clients alike. He began his career at U.S. Burner, later working for Jayson Air Conditioning and Heating. In 1999, Lawrence played an integral role in helping establish Silva's Mechanical Services. Through his vision and dedication, he was instrumental in growing the business into the success it is today. Lawrence retired as a valued commercial HVAC engineer in 2019, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, expertise, and mentorship that inspired many.

Outside of his professional life, Lawrence was a man of many talents and interests. He was an avid reader who appreciated the power of knowledge and a skilled artist with a natural gift for drawing. He also enjoyed playing racquetball, fishing, and cooking and was a diehard New York Giants fan, cheering passionately for his team every season. Lawrence’s greatest joy, however, came from spending time with family and vacationing with his wife.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 30 years, Dianne Sobel, who passed away in 2022, and his brother, Joel Sobel.

He is survived by his loving children: Howard Sobel (Margaret), Karen Wellington (Scott), Davia Kowalczyk (Caz), and Erica Barbieri (Jim). He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren: Gina Kourtesis (Anthony), Jim Barbieri, Brandon, Cristian, and Ava Kowalczyk, Jack, and Sam Wellington; and his great-granddaughter Calista, who brought him so much happiness. Lawrence also leaves behind his dear sister Randye Eichler, along with extended family and friends who will miss him deeply.

A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. A funeral service led by Rabbi Ellie Miller will take place at 6:00 PM during the visitation period. Cremation services will be private.

Lawrence Sobel will be remembered as a man of integrity, dedication, and warmth. His tireless work ethic, love for his family, and zest for life have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
