OBITUARY of BERTRAM H SHAPIRO MD DABA
Bertram Herbert Shapiro was born in Philadelphia, PA, on November 5, 1930, to Samuel S Shapiro, MD, a general practitioner, and Jennie (Greenburg). He graduated from Central High School in 1948 with honors and as President of the Student Tutors Club, receiving a BA degree. He finished his AB at the University of Pennsylvania with a double major in Chemistry and Zoology in 1952 and then graduated from Jefferson Medical College (now part of Thomas Jefferson University) with an MD degree in 1952. After his internship, he served as Captain, USAR at White Sands Missle Range, New Mexico. He was a resident in the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, finishing in 1961, and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. After being at Monmouth Medical Center and then Jersey City Medical Center, he joined St Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ
until his retirement.
He was wed to Edith "Dede" (Schwarz) in 1955 and is the parent of an accountant, Steven L Shapiro (Sandy) of Woodland Hills, CA, and a lawyer, Ruth Ward (Michael) of Clear Lake, TX. He has one granddaughter, Emma Ward. Following the death of his wife in 1990, he married a widow, Gerda Kallmuenzer-Collins. He has resided in Livingston, NJ, for a long time, where he raised his family.
He was a long-standing member of the New Jersey State Society of Anesthesiologists, serving as President in 1966, is a recipient of its Distinguished Service Award, and served as Delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists for six years.
Following his retirement, he served 8 years on the Institutional Review Board at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ and then spent 8 years as a board member of the Baroque Orchestra of NJ. He was the Founding Advisor of Explorer Post 513 (one of the first
co-ed posts) of the Boy Scouts of America at SBMC. Besides these activities, he has interests in classical music, transportation, national defense, travel, jokes, jokes and more jokes.
Following his cremation, a memorial service will be held at a future time.
