Obituary of Evelyn Hiers
Evelyn Hiers, age 94, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2014 at her home in Warren. Born in Detroit, MI, she resided in Herlong, CA and Columbia, SC then spent most of her life in Huntsville, AL before moving to Warren, NJ two years ago.
Before retiring, Evelyn was Personnel Director for the Office of Personnel Management for the United States Government in Huntsville, AL.
Evelyn was very active in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Huntsville AL, where she was a member of St. Anne's Guild and was church treasurer for over 30 years. She was also a member of the Vestry and Search Committee. The Hiers Hall at the church was named after Evelyn and her husband, James, in appreciation of their contributions and dedication to St. Thomas. Evelyn was a founding member of the first Al-Anon chapter in Alabama.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, James Edgar Hiers in 1972 and her son in law, Bruce C. Palmer.
She is survived by her daughters; Marion Evelyn Hiers Verdiramo and her husband, Vincent L., Christine Hiers Palmer and Mary Jane Hiers Peck; her grandchildren, Vincent Savino Verdiramo and his wife, Jennifer Levine Verdiramo, Richard Jerome Verdiramo and his wife, Tracey Brandt Verdiramo, William Bradley Price and his wife, Camille Swanson Price, and Anne Marie Verdiramo and her husband, Timothy Galbreath; her great grandchildren, Samuel, Andrew, Anthony, Nicholas, Vincent, Caroline and William.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014 from 10-11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life with communion at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 12200 Bailey Cove Road, Huntsville, AL 35803.
