James Edward Meyer (“Bunky”)
February 20, 1941 – January 1, 2025
James Edward Meyer, affectionately known as “Bunky” to his family and friends, passed away peacefully at his home in North Plainfield, New Jersey, on January 1, 2025. Born on February 20, 1941, in Manhattan, New York, to Walter and Sophie Meyer, Bunky spent his childhood in the city, where he formed the values of hard work and dedication that would define his life.
After graduating high school, Bunky proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1959 to 1961, with a station assignment in Missouri. Following his service, he returned home and met the love of his life, Margaret Ann McCarthy. The two shared an enduring love and soon settled in North Plainfield, where they built their home and raised their family for the past 60 years.
Bunky began his career working on the George Washington Bridge alongside his brother but found his calling as a longshoreman. He spent most of his career at Sea-Land, which later became Maersk, in Port Elizabeth, proudly representing Local 1804-1. Known for his incredible work ethic, Bunky balanced his demanding career with an unwavering dedication to his family, whom he considered the pride and joy of his life.
Bunky was a devout member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield, where he found solace in his faith and his community. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed cheering for the New York Yankees and sharing his passion for the game with loved ones.
Despite his many roles, Bunky’s greatest joy came from being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His love knew no bounds, and his family will always remember him as their steadfast protector and confidant. Bunky is survived by his loving wife Margaret Ann (Peggy) Meyer; children: James Meyer, Rob Meyer and his wife Denise, and Michele Smego and her husband Andrew. He also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren: Michael Smego and his wife Stephanie, Robert Meyer, and Jenna Smego, as well as his beloved great-grandchildren, Kyle and Jacob Smego.
Bunky’s loyal German Shorthaired Pointer, Kaiser, was always by his side, providing companionship and comfort, a testament to Bunky’s deep love for his family and friends, both human and animal.
