Louis Antao, Sr.

Obituary of Louis Gomes Antao, Sr.

Louis Gomes Antao, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey. He was 75 years old.

Born on November 4, 1949, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Louis was the son of hardworking parents who instilled in him a strong sense of family and dedication. He grew up in Elizabeth and later settled in Warren, New Jersey, where he and his loving wife, Carolyn, built a beautiful life together, raising their three children. The couple resided in Warren for over 30 years before moving to Basking Ridge 12 years ago.

Louis began his career helping run the family business, Boulevard Variety, a local deli and convenience store established by his mother in 1964. The store became a cornerstone of the community, and Louis took great pride in its success. In addition to the family business, he held a maintenance management position at the Hyatt in Morristown, New Jersey, before retiring 15 years ago.

Later on in life, Louis and Carolyn enjoyed attending services together at the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Springfield.

Louis's family fondly recalls his enthusiasm for luxury cars. He appreciated their craftsmanship and elegance, and his vehicles were always meticulously cared for. He also enjoyed playing cards with his friends, a pastime that often included memorable trips to casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and other destinations across the country.

Family meals held a special place in Louis’s heart. He loved gathering with loved ones over a delicious meal, and his family cherishes the memories of him enjoying one of his favorite dishes, Chicken Francese.

Louis cheered for the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, Michigan football and Duke basketball. He also had a deep love of travel. Some of their fondest memories include vacations to Lake George, Florida and traveling through Europe.

Above all, Louis was a kind-hearted and dedicated family man. His greatest joy came from spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, who will always remember his warmth, generosity, and unwavering love.

Louis is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Carolyn; his three loving children, Renée Mitzner (Scott), Louis Gomes Antao, Jr. (Tania), and Adam John “AJ” Antao (Amy); and his cherished grandchildren, Madison, Zoey, Sage, and Remi. He is also survived by his brother, Manuel “Manny” Antao, and many extended family members and dear friends.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth, New Jersey.
