Obituary of Leopold Landau
Mr. Leopold Landau, 75, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Amsterdam, he was raised in The Netherlands and was a "hidden child" Holocaust survivor. Mr. Landau immigrated to the US in 1957 with his parents and brother. He enlisted in the US Army and served for three years. He was married in The Netherlands in 1958 then received a BA degree in History at Upsala College, East Orange. He taught Latin at Middlesex High School for a few years before going into business managing garden apartments in Roselle Park.
Mr. Landau served on the North Plainfield Rescue Squad and was president of the board of the Plainfield Hebrew Institute.
He spoke seven languages, was an avid reader and had an encyclopedic knowledge of history.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 54 years, Ilse Anna Landau, his four children, Ralph Landau and his wife, Janelle, Martin Landau, Stephan Landau and his wife, Mary Alice and Deborah Szillat and her husband, Michael; a brother, Peter Landau and his wife, Madeline and 16 grandchildren, Dan, Abby, Ruth, Dov, Rachel, Mitchel, Max, Chloe, Katie, Kevin, Emily, Zachary, Jonathan, Samuel, Benjamin and Liam.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 11:30 am at the Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ with Cantor Lee Coopersmith officiating and interment at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin.
