George Joseph Green, was born on December 25, 1908 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late George W. and Charlotte Green. His early years were spent in New Bern, NC with his beloved grandmother, sister and brother. He completed High School in 1928 at St. Emma College in Rock Castle, VA. While there, he majored in industrial arts and agriculture. With a strong musical background and considerable talent, he played the alto saxophone and toured the country on a full time basis with a Big Band Orchestra. When he met Althea Myers, his life changed. The two were married in 1932 and made Plainfield, NJ their new hometown. Here, they went on to raise eight loving children, George, Jean, Mary, Kathryn, Richard, Robert, Kenneth, and Muhammad. George was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Plainfield for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Male Chorus and Voices of Inspiration Choir in which he sang second tenor for many decades. Occasionally, he traveled out of state to perform. He often commented on his love of singing with the choir and the joy it brought him. Prior to retiring in 2000, he worked as a clothes presser for more than 40 years at Mountain Cleaners of Berkeley Heights. On Saturday, June 28, 2003, George experienced his Homecoming, joining previously departed sons, Robert Green of Plainfield, NJ, and George W.
