Beloved Wife, Mother and Grandmother
North Plainfield: Jane Smith Thistle, age 77, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 26th with the loving care of McCutchen Friends Home in North Plainfield. Mrs. Thistle was born in Carneys Point, NJ and had lived in Metuchen for 10 years and North Plainfield for 45 years.
Mrs. Thistle received a B.S. from New Jersey College for Women (Douglass College) in New Brunswick. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Thistle had worked at DuPont Chemical in New Brunswick as an analytical chemist for 3 years. Later she worked for United National Bank in Plainfield.
A dedicated reader and lifelong learner, Mrs. Thistle was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts and was a member of the American Association of University Women. Her commitment to personal growth was substantial and her impact o her family was profound. She sang in the choir at Wilson Memorial Church in Watchung. She was an avid nature lover and enjoyed gardening and hiking. She also liked knitting, swimming, and spending time with her family. Her rich life was woven together by her love of family, friends, nature and traveling.
Mrs. Thistle is predeceased by her sister, Mary Neal Ellis, who died in 1992. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard Edwin Thistle, Sr. of North Plainfield; one son, Dr. Richard Edwin Thistle, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Fresno, CA; two daughters, Susan Jane Thistle Juiliano, Ed.M and her husband Frank of Hopewell, NJ and Diane Thistle Weinholtz, Ph.D and her husband Donn of Hartford, CT; 8 grandchildren, John, David, Philip, Richard III, Andrew, Jennifer, Robert and William; and 3 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Steven and John.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at Wilson Memorial Union Church, 7 Valley Road in Watchung. Arrangements are by Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung.
