Obituary of Gwendolyn E Scurry

Gwendolyn Scurry was a native of New York City. At the age of 10, she joined Emanuel A.M.E. Chapel in NYC. She was a youth and adult choir member, taught Sunday school, was the assistant Superintendent of Sunday school and secretary of the Christian Endeavor League. The family lived in Hyannis, Mashpee, Massachusetts before settling in Westfield, where Mrs. Scurry joined the St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church. Mrs. Scurry was active in many community services; U.S.O., Red Cross, the Girl Scouts, PTA grade school through high school and the Westfield Community Center. The family then moved to Bronx, NY where Mrs. Scurry joined and was baptized Easter Sunday, 1966 at the Trinity Baptist Church, Bronx, NY. She was a member of its Revival Choir, secretary for 14 years for Group 4, music director and was a coordinator of Vacation Bible School. Mrs. Scurry was also a member of the Ministers Wives of the Greater New York Area. Upon returning to New Jersey, Mrs. Scurry joined Bethel Baptist Church and later returned to St. Lukes A.M.E. Zion Church, where she remained a member until her passing on August 29, 2003. Mrs. Scurry has received awards from the Girl Scouts of Greater New York and the volunteers of P.S. 21, Bronx, NY. She is a graduate of Fordham School of Allied Health Careers and was a Certified Pediatric Nurse. Her husband, the late Reverend Leroy Scurry, predeceased her September 30, 1978. Surviving are two daughters, Lenore and Andrea Scurry; one granddaughter, DaShawn Scurry Reynolds and her husband Ainsley; one sister, Mary Johnson and her husband Carl; one nephew, Robert Mero; one great nephew, one great niece; dearest cousin, the late Professor John W. Work III; other relatives and many friends. Viewing will be at 10 am followed by an 11:00 am Service on Saturday, September 6, 2003 at St. Lukes A.M.E. Zion Church, 500 Downer St., Westfield. Interment will be at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery in Paramus. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 US Hwy 1, North Brunswick, NJ 08902. Arrangements are under the direction of the Higgins Home for Funerals, Plainfield.
