Obituary of Helen Louise Murphy

Scotch Plains: Helen Louise Hargis Murphy, age 92, died on Saturday, October 11, 2003 at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Cave Springs, GA to the late James Emory and Sarah Lena Hargis, Helen grew up in the south and attended Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA. She moved to New Jersey in 1935 and raised her family in Woodbridge. For the last 13 years she has resided in the Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains. Helen loved to travel, read and was self-taught on the piano. She is predeceased by her husband, Sam Leigh Murphy in 1959, a daughter Nancy Leigh Reina in 2001, her brother James Emory Hargis, Jr., and a sister Frances McCrory. Helen is survived by her daughter, Judith Franco of North Plainfield, her two sisters, Mary Pierce of Braselton, GA and Betty Burton of Atlanta, GA. Also 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 14th from 7-9 p.m. with services at 8:30 p.m. in the Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung. Cremation will be private.
