Obituary of Bernard G. Freeman
Bernard Freeman, age 83, of Scotch Plains, died Saturday December 13, 2003 at the Margaret McCarrick Care Center in Somerset NJ.
Mr. Freeman was born on May 5, 1920 in North Plainfield, the son of Thomas Joseph Freeman and Mary Agnes Rafferty Freeman. Bernard attended St. Marys School and St. Bernards in Plainfield and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1938. He resided in Scotch Plains for the last twenty five years.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942, serving in the Air Corps in Panama and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. He received a BA from Seton Hall University in 1950 and attended the Immaculate Conception Seminary and was ordained a Deacon.
He taught Latin in Plainfield, Westfield and Chatham school districts, and English at the Warren Middle School, retiring in 1982.
He was a long time member of the Maple Leafs, a sports club in the Netherwood section of Plainfield and was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Westfield.
His brothers Thomas M., James F. and John J. Freeman and a sister Margaret Daly, all predeceased him.
He is survived by two nephews, James P. Freeman of North Plainfield and Bill Daly of Jonesboro, GA, three nieces, Mary Bowers of Bridgewater, Joan Gaertner of Stanhope and Dorothy McColgan of Bayville and three sister-in-laws, Teresa Freeman of North Plainfield, Mary Freeman of Nutley and Ada Freeman of Toms River.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday December 17th, 2003 at 9:15 am from the Higgins Home for Funerals, 461 Somerset St., North Plainfield followed by a 10 am funeral Mass at St. Josephs R.C. Church in North Plainfield and interment at St. Marys Cemetery in Plainfield. Visitation will be on Monday from 7-9 pm and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Send condolences to www.higginsfuneralhome.com
