Obituary of George E. Christian

George Edward Christian, age 76, died on Thursday, December 18, 2003 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. He was born on March 21, 1927 in South Ozone Park, NY to William Sheeler Christian and Edith Plunkett. The family moved to NJ in 1931, living first on a farm in Locktown, then to North Plainfield, where Mr. Christian attended North Plainfield High School. In 1944, he enlisted in the US Navy. He served as Seaman First Class on the USS Fanshaw Bay during WWII until he returned to NJ in 1946. He graduated from North Plainfield High School in 1947. Mr. Christian married Elizabeth Reid in 1950. They lived in North Plainfield and together had seven children. He worked for many years as a salesman at Grubers in Union. After retiring in 1989, he and his wife moved to Lakehurst, NJ. They were very active in the chorale group The Westonairs. He was also an avid member in Kiwanis, a service organization devoted to helping children in the community. George is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth, and daughter Catherine. He is survived by his brother Jack Christian; six children, Thomas, Margaret, Michael, Andrew, Virginia Goodman, and Paul; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will begin on Tuesday, December 23rd at 10:00 am from Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Boulevard, Watchung, followed by an 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Marys Stony Hill Church in Watchung. Interment will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown, NJ. Visitation will be on Monday from 7-9 pm at the funeral home.
