Obituary of David Gosnell

David Foote Gosnell passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at home having survived cancer for over 7 years. Born Feb. 1, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois, the first baby born in Cook County that month. He was the son of noted political scientist pioneer, Dr. Harold F. Gosnell and educator Florence Gosnell. Resident of North Plainfield since 1981, He grew up in Chicago and Bethesda, MD. Attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC, Graduated from Principia College and pursued his Master's Degree at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. Prolific writer of poetry and President of the Brooklyn Poetry Circle for 10 years, his most recent poem was published this month about 9/11 called "Come Again" by International Poetry Publishers. He was a member of several writing groups in NJ, also the Old Guard of Summit, Westfield Glee Club, the Round Valley United Methodist Church in Lebanon, and the Insight Cancer Support Group in Scotch Plains. He also traveled on a world tour with the American Political Science Association, meeting heads of state, including Indira Ghandi and King Hussein of Jordan, and also attended President Kennedy's inauguration. Veteran of US Army, serving in Germany during the Berlin Airlift and also in Washington, DC with the Central Intelligence Agency. Employed by the US Federal Government for 32 years most of which were as Buildings Manager in several cities including Anchorage Alaska, NY Customs House, Newark Federal Building and Belle Mead Depot. After retiring in 1986, he worked for DMC Services as an energy consultant for 12 years. Married for 36 years to the former Mary Phillips of Brooklyn, NY. Surviving are his wife, two children, Anne and James all residing in NJ. And brother John and wife, Margaret of Bethesda, MD. Also, four nieces and nephews, and a great-niece. Arrangements by Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung. Visitation, Friday, Jan. 30th 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm, Funeral Service at the Round Valley United Methodist Church in Lebanon, Sat., Jan. 31st 11 am.
