Obituary of Dorothy Mades

Dorothy Johnson Mades, 77, formerly of Warren, NJ, died Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at Wake Medical Center, in Raleigh, NC. She was born on July 6, 1926, in Perth Amboy and was raised in Woodbridge. She was a graduate of Woodbridge High School and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City. She was subsequently employed as a medical secretary in Newark. Mrs. Mades was married in 1947 and moved to Raleigh where she worked as a secretary at the NC State University Textile School for several years and was later the secretary for her husbands construction company, E. H. Mades, Inc. In 1966, she returned to New Jersey with her family. She was a longtime resident of Warren, NJ, and was employed there as a secretary with Paulus, Sokolowski & Sartor for nearly 20 years until 2000. She then returned to Raleigh and enjoyed a busy retirement lifestyle. For the past 30 years, Mrs. Mades was a part-time antique dealer who participated in shows in New Jersey, New York and North Carolina, developing expertise in country antiques, china, linen, and childrens books and toys. She had several boxers over the years and most recently had two beloved champions who competed in many dog shows, including the Westminster Kennel Club show. She was a member and officer of the New Jersey Boxer Club. She was an energetic, loving, caring and enthusiastic person who lived for her family and friends. She treasured time with her children and grandchildren. In retirement, she enjoyed meeting her friends to walk in the mall and swimming several times per week. Mrs. Mades was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy M. Johnson and Elwood R. Johnson; her husband of nearly 37 years, Elmer H. Mades; and her daughters, Nancy J. Mades and Susan D. Mades. Surviving are her daughter, Janetlynne M. Hood of Longs, SC; her son, Robert H. Mades of Cary, NC; her grandchildren, Brendan S. Hood, also of Longs, Christopher R. Mades and Jennifer N. Mades, both of Cary; and her sister, Marguery J. Saxe, of Wilbraham, MA. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday February 22 at the White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, in Raleigh. The funeral service and internment will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday February 24 at The Presbyterian Church, 1 East Oak Street, Basking Ridge, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the Hilltop Home for Retarded Children, 3006 New Bern Ave., Raleigh, NC 27610, or The American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006.
