Obituary of Donald Hamilton Ayers
Donald Hamilton Ayers, age 83 died on Sunday, November 21, 2004 at his home in Berkeley heights. He was born in Metuchen and and had lived in Maplewood and Union before moving to Berkeley Heights in 1955.
Mr. Ayers attended the University of Virginia.
He was a pilot in the Army Air Corp during World War II, flying over the Himalayan Mountains in the China-Burma-India campaign. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters. He was also awarded the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal. He was a member of the Hump Pilots Association.
Mr. Ayers was a sales representative with Grammer, Dempsey & Hudson Steel in Newark, NJ.
Mr. Ayers is survived by his wife, Eileen McDowell Ayers; his son Scott Ayers of Branchburg and his two grandchildren, Lauren and Michael Ayers of Branchburg.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 24th at 9:00 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. followed by a 10:00 a.m. funeral Mass at Church of the Little Flower, Berkeley Heights. Interment will be at St. Marys Stony Hill Church Cemetery, Watchung. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 117, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 or to the charity of your choice..
