Obituary of Virginia May “Hale” Higgins

Virginia May Jinny Higgins, age 83 died on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ. Mrs. Higgins was born in Terre Haute, IN and had lived in Queens Village, NY, moving to the Gillette section of Long Hill Township 11 years ago. After her husband Walters death in 1966, Mrs. Higgins went to York College, part of the City College of New York and received her BA in education, and later earned her Masters degree from Queens College in NY. She was a Special Education teacher in Cardozo High School in Bayside Queens for 19 years, retiring in 1991. She was a Navy Veteran of World War II. She was a member of the Wilson Memorial Union Church in Watchung and belonged to their womens guild. She was also an avid bowler and had participated in local leagues in New Jersey and Queens, NY. Surviving are 3 sons, Joseph L. Higgins and his wife Eileen of Martinsville,NJ, Walter J. Higgins of Bayside Queens, NY and John P. Higgins and his wife Diana of Bayshore, LI; 2 daughters, Judith H. Roberts and her husband Benjamin of Los Altos, CA and Florence M. Higgins, DVM and her husband John Lebens of Rush, NY; her brother, Thomas Hale and his wife Dorothy of Hartford City, Indiana and her sister Dorothy Pennington of Hudson, FL. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 5th at 1:00 p.m. at the Wilson Memorial Union Church in Watchung. Interment will be on Monday, December 6th at Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY. Visitation will be on Saturday, December 4th from 2-4 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ.
