I am so grateful to have known Denise and fortunate that our paths crossed. I worked closely with Denise during our Field Department days at NBCC and she was a true mentor. She taught me a lot. Work related as well as life lessons. From tips on raising a daughter to tips on how to get new releases from the library. She loved books. As I read the comments, I remember hearing so many of the names posted-Shatzie, Lee, Vance, Charlotte, and many others. She loved her family very much. To Brooklyn – she was so very proud of you and I could feel her love for all of you. I wish you peace in knowing that she touched many lives. She was a no non-sense, brave and vivacious woman. I will celebrate her life by keeping the time shared in my heart.

Happy New Life Nysie on this your birthday! You have always been the one to pioneer a new adventure with the strength and fortitude to see it manifest. Here you are again on a new quest paving the way and trying to make it an easy transition for us all. I love you for that and so many other things. You have raised a beautiful daughter who exhibits that same strength and determination and I know it makes you proud and happy to see how your efforts were not fruitless -- then again you wouldn't have had it any other way :-)! I already miss our long talks, your protective nature, our sister fights, and our fun times. Your powerful strenght and zeal is still here. So I try to reconcile your absence with you moved to another country (or something like that), where you're learning new things that you will teach us when we get there. I hope you know how much I appreciate you. And I know too that you're telling me to stop crying and that it's ok but I just miss you and I love you Sis! Marsha

How that smile engaged me! Denise was a a firebrand at NBCC who intimidated me when we first met. Then I realized that she simply had little tolerance for folks who didn't pay attention or didn't listen. Otherwise, she was indeed a most helpful, warm, caring individual with enormous tolerance. Those of use in the field who got to know her missed her regular e-mails when she moved to the program department but were delighted that her skills were being put to good use there. We were naturally ddevastated when her recurrence caused her resignation. She will besorely missed on this earth. Desnise's light, however, will never be extinguished. My thoughts are with all of Denise's family members and friends. Vicki

I had the priviledge of meeting Denise at the home of her sister who invited a group of women to her home for food and new friendships. I remember thinking how positive and friendly Denise was that night. I enjoyed talking with her. You don't always connect with people you meet for the first time, but it was easy to laugh and talk with Denise. I know that she will continue let her light so shine.

I had the good fortune of working with Denise and the Project LEAD program at NBCC. The thing I always admired about Denise at LEAD is how committed to the mission she was and how connected to the participants. I particularly appreciated her ability to make LEAD feel like a safe and welcoming place for the African American women who came. Whatever table Denise sat at during dinner always had the most raucous conversations and the loudest laughter.

Denise was a very important member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition's family. By her work and personal example, she inspired breast cancer survivors to fight the disease, she helped educate advocates on what to fight for through Project LEAD, and she encuraged all of us to continue to have hope. She did this with her great NJ accent, her sharp sense of humor and her love of life. May she rest in peace. Annette Bar-Cohen, Director of Programs, NBCC

Dear Family,
"When your heart is empty, filling it with happy memories can help you find your smile".
That is what I will cherish the most about Denise, her infectious smile. I am so grateful to Nanci & Vance for sharing such a beautiful friend and sister with me here at Ancon. Denise was my right hand during the multiple CSS conferences where she became a part of the Job Corps family. It was during our free time in multiple cities we traveled that I got to know her best. We experienced new foods and shared life's up's and downs. Each night at dinner we would raise our glass and say "Cheers" So Denise again, I say "Cheers Job Well Done". Memories are the legacy of love, and I thank God for my time with you. Brooklyn, you were the topic of most of our conversations and the apple of your mother's eye, parents and siblings you were her core. May you find peace in your time of sorrow and know that the Lord is with you always. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Lovingly, Beverly Jackson

Ms. Denise was more than my moms best friend, she was a part of our family. She has been there since before I can remember and has always been there when I needed her. My most memorable experience was when she picked me up from school while I was at Rutgers and drove me home and on the drive there she shared with me wise advice from schooling to dating, things I will always keep with me... But she was a wonderful, loving and caring person and she will truly be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Denise when she was an event planner for Ancon in Lanham, MD. We had a great time traveling together to Chicago, San Antonio, and Arlington, VA. Denise had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful conversationalist. I now know that she was also strong and courageous. Never once did she complain or talk about her illness. We exchanged many stories about providing care and support for our parents. I want to offer my sincere sympathy to the entire family and to say to Brooklyn, you were the light of your mother's life and she was very, very proud of you. May God sustain each of you and give you peace.
