Obituary of Irene L. Leath

At 6:10 am on September 21, 2007, Irene Leath entered into peace. Irene was born on September 14, in Newville, Alabama to Sam and Lillie Lynn. She attended Catholic High School where she received a basketball scholarship to college in Montgomery, Alabama. She attained her LPN and went on to receive her bachelors and masters degrees in social work and became an LICSW. In 1944, she married Benjamin Franklin Leath and their union produced two dedicated and faithful daughters, Annette and Elaine. Irene was a nurse at Muhlenberg Hospital. She retired from Greenbrook Community Center where she served as the Assistant Superintendent. Irene was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Bernards Catholic Church and an avid activist involved in numerous community activities such as the Seven Plus One travel club, the County Board, Concerned Women, the NAACP, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Camp Crusade, and the Union County Minority Task Force on Aging. She was very active with the Democratic Party and was a Democratic Committee Woman. She was devoted to serving the disadvantaged and homeless providing food baskets, meals and other support regularly. Irene is survived by her devoted husband, Benjamin; two daughters, Annette and Elaine; two sons-in-law, Quentin Burgess and Michael Huguely; three grandchildren, Nicole Prescott, Brandi and Michael Huguely Jr.; four brothers, Lloyd, Robert, Bill and Willie Lynn; one sister. Faye Joanne Leath and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 26th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in St. Bernards RC Church, George Street, Plainfield followed by a 12 noon Mass of Resurrection. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
