Granny lived with us for most of my childhood. I have a lot of good memories with her. She lived below us for a while with a poodle named Tiny. When I was a kid she always told me stories of how she was responsible for teaching me to count. She reminisced about taking me as a baby to the grocery store, showing off her lil red headed granddaughter to the other ladies and teaching me to count the cans. I don’t remember this actually happening because I was a baby, but I do remember her telling me how we spent a lot of time together grocery shopping and that she loved every moment of it.
I had my first cup of coffee with Granny and for those who know me that was my first of many, many cups. I was only about 8 years old visiting her one day and I always thought how cool the grown ups looked drinking coffee with their cups and saucers. As she was brewing some for herself, I asked her for a cup. She replied, “You drink coffee?” I told her “Yes” even though this wasn’t the case. She asked me how I took my coffee and my only response was, “the same way you take it.” She laughed and poured me a cup with just milk, no sugar. I remember tasting it and hating it because it was so gross. But I had pride at age 8 and never admitted to her that I didn’t like it. I think she knew all along but didn’t want to embarrass me. Thanks Granny for letting me act like a grown up.
It makes me sad to think the extent of my memories are from such a young age, but they are really nice, funny and special…and for that I feel grateful.
Granny, I hope you know you brought four really amazing people into this world. They have shaped who I am and so have you.
Love Always,
Kelly
