Obituary of Loretta Latore

Watchung: Loretta M. Giuffre Latore, nee Lunetta Furia was born June 10, 1947 in Montorio Al Vomano region of Abruzzi, Italy to Adelina and Pasquale Furia. After the death of her mother, she was sent to the United States as a young child, where she was adopted by Joseph and Rose Giuffre. She attended Mercyhurst College and taught in the Perth Amboy School system. Loretta married Lawrence Latore on August 19, 1973. In 1983, after a separation of 30 years, she was reunited with her sisters and brother, with whom she had not had contact since leaving Italy. Loretta taught Special Education in the Watchung School system for many years and was nominated several times for the Governors Teacher Award. She was particularly able to empathize with children with learning disabilities due to her own struggles to learn English as a child, and made an incredible difference in the lives of the children she taught. She is predeceased by her parents, Adelina and Pasquale Furia and Joseph and Rose Giuffre. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence, her children, Roseann Sicola, Joseph Latore and Larry D. Latore, her grandson, Dominic Sicola, her sisters, Rita Potuto of East Hanover, NJ and Giovannina Macinato of Italy, her brother, Giacomo Furia, also of Italy and many nieces and nephews. Donations may be made in her memory to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 785 Springfield Avenue, Summit, NJ 07901. Funeral Services will be held at 8:45 am on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung followed by a 10:00 am funeral Mass at St. Marys Stony Hill RC Church in Watchung. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the funeral home.
