Obituary of Barbara Ann Reed

Barbara Ann Reed, 71, died Friday, May 2, 2008 at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Born in Anderson, SC, she resided in Winston-Salem, NC before moving to Piscataway in 1972. Prior to retiring in 1994, Ms. Reed was employed as an English and Reading teacher for 36 years. She was employed in 1972 by the Plainfield Board of Education to teachthe sixth, seventh and eighth grades at MaxsonMiddle School. Previously, she taught in Winston-Salem, NC. Barbara Ann received a Bachelors degree from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC and a Masters degree from the College of NJ. An active member of St. Johns Baptist Church in Scotch Plains since 1973; she was a member of the Nurses Unit, Scholarship Committee and Hospitality Club. Previously, she was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. In addition, Barbara Ann was a member of the (NJEA) NJ Education Association as well as the (PEA) Plainfield Education Association. Her parents, Julian and Daisy Hammond and two sisters Deborah Clifford and Linda Hammond, all predeceased her. Surviving are her much loved nephew whom she endeared as a son, Stephon and his wife Sharon Hammond of Plainfield; the joy of her heart, her two granddaughters, Paige Taylor and Elyse Catherine Hammond; her best friend, Peggy Ann Smith of Plainfield; her neighbor and friend, George Young of Piscataway and the many children she taught for 36 years. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 3:00 5:00 pm followed by a 5:00 pm Service and Repast at St. Johns Baptist Church, 2387 Morse Avenue, Scotch Plains. Donations to St. Johns Scholarship Fund in her memory would be deeply appreciated. Flowers should be delivered to Church.
