My husband and I were patients of Dr. Loeffler for many years. He was not only the best doctor we could have, but he was a dear friend and one of the kindest human beings this side of Heaven. We actually looked forward to our doctor visits. Somehow when you left his office, you felt uplifted and refreshed. He always had something kind to say and his personality was second to none. We just learned of his passing yesterday and our hearts are very heavy. He was constantly in my prayers. We offer our deepest sympathies to his family, who he always spoke of so lovingly. We are so sorry to have lost this beautiful soul. Our prayers are with all of you.

We were devastated to hear of Joe's passing. His loss is unimaginable. We have had the honor of being Joe's patients since the end of his tenure as Chief Resident at Overlook. How many people can say they actually looked forward to going to the doctor's office? But with Joe, you were blessed to have the good fortune to have a physician who practiced with great compassion and truly cared about his patients...and had a great sense of humor. He was more than a physician to us, he was a friend. Joe was one of a kind and we are honored to have had the opportunity to have known him all these years. No words can describe how sorely he will be missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family during these most difficult of times.

Dear Karen,
Although I only met you and Joe last year, I feel like I've known you both for a long time. You both are so easy to know...it's been a pleasure to work with him. I'm glad I had the opportunity to get to know him and experience his keen wit and dry sense of humor. What a sweet, intelligent, kind, and funny man...and a wonderful physician. You've created a beautiful family--Hope, Kara, Joe, Paul--I know your memories will bring you smiles and Juliana will bring you much joy and love. Joe will be watching over all of you. Love, Terry

My condolences to you all. I can't tell you how much I will miss Doc Joe. His talent was at the top of his field. What wonderful memories people have shared about Joe's life. I was in some classes with Joe at St. Joe's HS and I also have fond memories of Joe. I felt touched by Joe's spirit when I received an email from our classmate, Don Fallon, 1/2 hr before the funeral mass on Fri. I live in Austin, Texas, but just happened to be in NJ with my wife Theresa, visiting my brother, Tom, in Flemington. My wife, Theresa, and I arrived just before the mass started and felt so blessed to be able to share this moment with Joe's family and friends. It was 40 years ago when I last saw Joe, but I felt God's hand in guiding my wife and I to be present and to wish him well in his new life with Christ.
Our prayers are with all the family in this time of sorrow, but also joined with them in the joy of knowing that such a good man is back in the loving arms of our heavenly Father. God Bless Joe and his family and friends. Jim & Theresa Chen

Dr. Loeffler is a very special man. I cannot even begin to express how much he means to me. As my doctor, he took care of me and understood me. I always knew that help was only a phone call away and he was so kind and helpful. When I moved to Brooklyn, I continued to drive in to see him because I could not imagine ever seeing anyone else. I loved every visit with him because I was able to chat with him and he was always so nice and so funny and so happy to see me. I also let him know how much I cared for him and enjoyed his company. It is certainlyvery rare to have that level of brilliance and kindness together in one man. His smile was always so warm and his greeting of "Hey kiddo" would make me happy no matter how ill I felt. He will always have a very special place in my heart. It was an honor to meet his wife and daughters at his visitation and I will certainly be keeping his family in my prayers. God bless you, Dr. Loeffler. Thank you for being the doctor and the man that you were. I am truly blessed and honored to have known you.

It is with great sadness that we read of the passing of your beloved husband, father and son. Our hearts go out to you all for your great loss. We have been patients of his for well over 20 years. Last year while we were in Florida for the winter I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. I called the office for a referral to a doctor to see when we returned to NJ and Mrs Loeffler answered the phone and was so encouraging to me. She phoned the Doctor at home, where he was recuperating, and got me the name of an oncologist/gynecologist and was so insistant that I had to come home to NJ for my treatment and to be near my family. I will never forget her for that. I did come back home for my treatment and sugery and we also saw Dr. Loeffler several times during the summer and fall and we would compare notes. What a great loss of a wonderful doctor and friend. He will never be replaced. God rest his soul and may He give you all strength to be able to bear this great loss. Between our years as students at St. Joseph’s High and roommates at Holy Cross, Joe and I (and of course, Paul) shared many seminal experiences, concentrated in a period of our most formative years. Joe always was a natural leader. His intensity and determination were leavened by his mischievousness, quick sense of humor and his ability to characterize situations and people succinctly and in a comical manner. During junior year in college I went to school in Vienna, Austria (seems like I must have paved the way for Paul on that one). After Holy Cross, Joe pursued medical school and his career in medicine (Paul again later took the wrong path and like me went to law school).
In any event, I am so gratified to see the respect, esteem and love that “Dr. Loeffler” is held by his patients, colleagues, family and friends. I know that St. Joseph’s High School and Holy Cross are so proud to have Joe as one of our own. Joe’s Mom and Dad and siblings and his wife and children should take great pride and consolation in the wonderful “gift of Joe” that they nurtured and sustained and shared over the years with so many others. It is obvious that Joe impacted us in a powerful and personal way.
In view of that chorus of friends and admirers touched by Joe, my prayer for Joe’s family is (to paraphrase an old Swedish saying) that just as shared joy is a double joy, may this time of mourning make the sorrow we share half a sorrow.God Bless, Tim Smith

Dear Loefflers All,
I was devastated to read in the Courier of Joe's passing. Although I haven't seen any of you in over 40 years, you are all such vivid people in my memory that I feel as though I lost a family member. The years in South Plainfield were happy ones, and I loved the time I spent with your family on Tompkins Avenue. Over the years, I have had brief updates on all of your activities, especially from Paul's law partner who had appeared before the Zoning Board when I was vice-chair in Long Hill Township in the 80's, so I knew that all of you at that point were thriving and successful. Joe had an amazing--though far too short--life, and I have read about him more than once in local papers. No surprise there--Joe, Paul, Hope and Peggy were all amazing kids, and I am sad that I lost touch with you all.
I am not coming to the wake today, but will try to make it to the church tomorrow. In any event, please know that my fondest thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.

To say that I idolized Joe Loeffler could possibly be the most significant understatement of all time. Back in the early 70’s Joe and Paul worked for my family at Pellicane’s liquors, in the store and making deliveries. In the summer they worked cleaning oil burners. What a treat for an 8 year old kid to get to make deliveries with Joe. He could to this day quite possibly be the funniest person I have ever met. I hung on his every word…appropriate or not. I lived to go to the store to “work” when Joe was there. The coolest event of all time was when I got to hang out with Joe, Paul and my cousin Joe. I still cannot remember laughing as hard as I laughed during those times. Whether it was at the store or when I got to visit them at Holy Cross for the Holy Cross v Rutgers football game (never so cold in my life).
Then Joe wanted to go to medical school. It was a very different time back then and he started his education in the “Old Country” finishing in New York. I somehow already knew that I wanted to go to med school and Joe’s struggles motivated me to work harder and not go through the hell he went through to reach his goal. I was not sure I was as motivated as he was to get to the finish line. Even at my wedding, he continued to give me sage advice about medicine and its future (Paul may remember that conversation).
Well, I made it as well. My career has been varied. I took a slightly different path, surgeon as opposed to internist. Left NJ as opposed to staying. Married 20 years tomorrow to Hope’s best friend’s sister. Three kids instead of four. I can say however that there are innumerable trauma patients, surgical patients and more recently breast cancer patients that have unknowingly benefited from the humor, the humanity and the kindness emblazoned in me all those years ago by that funny guy I would ride with while he made liquor deliveries.
That humor, humanity and kindness, born in Plainfield, sharpened in Bound Brook, Worcester, Bologna and New York and finally perfected in Summit…lives on in doctors he has touched, especially in one surgeon in Virginia and is passed on to patients daily.
How great it would be to be a physician like Joe Loeffler.

I started going to him when I was in my 20's, he was not only my doctor but more like family. My Mom and he had a wonderful relationship and he was always there for her, she is overwhelmed. He was loved by his patients and will never be replaced. My thoughts and prayers are sent to his wife, children, parents and siblings who I can only imagine are devastated. May the arrival of Julianna bring joy back to your family. With deepest sympathy, Angela Bellino

Dearest Leoffler Family,
These sad days bring childhood memories to mind. I think it was my brother Peter's 8th birthday party - how cool that BOTH Loeffler brothers attended! Where Joey was, Paul wasn't far behind! Great team!
Sacred Heart School.
My Mom (Irma, now 83), my husband Jim and I (now retired) and our daughter Julia (17) relocated to the Outer Banks of N. Carolina 3 years ago. My brother Peter passed away in 2000 - battled a rare form of cancer - and my Dad Peter died in 2001 - pancreatic cancer.
My heart is breaking for all of you - losing Joe so young is so tragic - you all must be truly heartbroken and exhausted emotionally. We understand how difficult this is for all of you - such a wonderful, close family.
Joseph's life was too short, certainly, but he left a legacy that most do not accomplish in a full lifetime. How proud you must all be of his achievements and service.
Please know that although there have been many, many years in between, our prayers for you and Joe are as sincere as they would have been in the 1950's. May God bless all of you with the strength and courage to continue and to help each other cope with your loss.
With deepest sympathy.
Love,
Marcy, Jim, Julia, and Irma

Dear Hope...I am sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I know how important he was in your life and I cannot even imagine the sorrow that you and your family are experiencing at this time. I was fortunate to meet Joe a few times, and was quickly able to see beyond his stern exterior to the caring and loving father that he was. He had a great subtle sense of humor and wit. You, along with Kara, Joe Jr., and Paul, show that your father did a unsurpassed job in raising children who have ambition, character, and a strong work-ethic. He will be missed. My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to your entire family.

Dear Karen, Kara, Joey, Hope and Paul,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband/father. He was a very special person who I will never forget. He always seemed to light up a room with his presence. I can remember many nights after babysitting all of us would sit there and talk. Even though he was exhausted from a long week at work, he would always listen and chime in with a joke or two to make all of us smile. I will truly miss him. He was like a second father to me.
You are in my thoughts!

My heart was absolutely broken to hear of the loss of Dr. Loeffler. My thoughts and prayers are with the Loeffler family at this time. It is no coincidence that each person has mentioned his kindness, his compassion, his joy in talking about his family, his spirit. I not only feel that I've lost a doctor....after 17 years I have lost a friend. He never forgot to ask about anyone in my family, he shared you (his family) with me, and in close to two decades he's handed me a lot of tissues to dry tears while keeping a hand on my shoulder and rejoiced with me during the exciting times in life...most recently my pregnancy.
Very often he spoke of his wife and children, always with love and pride. He was an outstanding and extraordinary person, the kind you don't encounter every day in life. Alike myself, I'm positive his patients will miss and not forget him. May you all find peace at this time.

Dr. Loeffler was an amazing human being. I feel so priveledged to have known such a caring individual. We first met when I was a teenager and I can recall him putting stitches in my head on his lunch break without even thinking twice about it. He always made time for his patients.
He had a great sense of humor and was always one to crack jokes that always made me laugh.
What I will remember most about Dr. Loeffler is his dedication to his family. His children always put a smile on his face. He spoke about them proudly.
He was an extraordinary individual who will be missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.

Joe and Paul Loeffler were actually my second and third brothers, along with my brother Scott. Peg and Hope were also the sisters that I never had. I spent so much time at the Loeffler's house during high school that Kit and Hank were almost forced to adopt me. The upside of that was that my parents always knew where I was when I wasn't at home.
Even in grammar school, and then in high school and at Holy Cross, Joe inspired in me a sense of leadership and community involvement, which continues with me even today. He also set an example for me academically, to always set my goals to a high level of educational achievement. Joe's example gave me the confidence and vision to become a physician myself.
Mostly, I loved Joe's sense of humor, his sense of family and his sense of loyalty to his friends. I miss my friend and all I can say is "Joe, save us a place in heaven and, oh, by the way, I expect that you are chairman of some department there already."
With much love from Neil, Ann, Ashley, Josh, Taylor and Alison.

I am deeply sadden by the news of such a great loss. I have been a patient of Dr. Loeffler for over 25 years. His medical expertise was phenomenal. But more than that, Dr. Loeffler was truly the most genuine, caring, compassionate, and kind doctor I have ever met. I used to tease him that he was like the t.v. doctor Marcus Welby MD! The medical profession has lost a great physician, and we, his patients, have lost a doctor who truly cared, and one that can never be replaced.I feel privileged to be his patient and blessed to have known him. He is truly missed.

Joe. Joseph. Dad. Uncle Joe. Dr. Loeffler. And my personal favorite, Dr. Ju-Ju.
He went by many names, and was loved by many people. What a wonderful son, husband, father, brother, uncle…and one amazingly nice guy.
Joe lived life to the fullest! As a teenager, he enjoyed “days of glory” with his band,
The Impalas. Probably the best part of that gig was hanging with his best friend: his brother, Paul. They were always thick as thieves! I remember Joe playing with my baby brother’s toy helicopter at Christmas, with the biggest grin crossing his face. He delighted in teasing Peg and me on Saturday mornings when he would drive us to Plainfield and drop us off to shop for “tops” (“never bottoms,” he noted). I remember going sledding on the closed Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in the winter (after dark, of course!) and running the toboggan into a huge oak tree. We laughed so hard we could hardly sneak out of there! I heard stories of his reign as President of the Student Council at St. Joe’s; one of his “duties” at the school dances was to choose the winning ticket for the “album giveaway”…funny how Paul’s ticket was the winning one chosen at each and every dance! Joe’s sense of humor, love of family, and enjoyment of his friends drew everyone to him. And what a gentleman! He was always fun-loving but respectful. These special traits make him unforgettable!
Joe worked so hard to become the fine doctor he was! It still strikes me as unbelievable that he was able to finish at the top of his class at Holy Cross, go for a time to Bologna, Italy to begin his medical training, work to finish his studies at Einstein. What a commitment! How lucky that he had Karen by his side to help him. And although he was exhausted and overworked during those early years, he was especially delighted with the arrival of Kara. He was so pleased and proud…as he was with the arrival of each of his beautiful children…Joe, Hope, Paul. I will never forget his tenacity. Unforgettable!
Dr. Joe was a dedicated and talented physician. Many times, he made obscure diagnoses when patients were at a loss. He was compassionate, helpful, and reassuring. I met a girl once in a medical office in Monmouth County, and she recognized the “Loeffler” name. She asked me if I knew “Dr. Joe,” and when I assured her that I did, she spent fifteen minutes singing his praises. This woman drove at least 60 miles each way to see him in his office! Dr. Joe always helped his family during times of medical crises as well. I once saw him save Aunt Hope’s life by dislodging a peanut from her windpipe. Scared the hell out of me, but he was cool and collected. When Megan was on her way to a semester in Paris, he not only diagnosed her asthma but spent several hours putting together her “medical itinerary”…prescriptions, dosages, notes, instructions (and a few jokes) into a binder for her journey. Unforgettable!
Talking about Dr. Ju-Ju would not be complete without mention of his incredible sense of humor. He could take the most mundane moment and turn it into high comedy. No subject was off limits! I once sat behind him in church, and the sermon was running a bit long…he “sat” Kara’s discarded Barbie doll next to him in the pew, and held her tiny “hand” between his thumb and forefinger. Joe knew I was a great audience for his antics!
Unforgettable.
Albert Pine, an English author, once wrote that, “What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.”
Dr. Joseph G. Loeffler did for others, with love, care, and compassion. He will live forever in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is simply… unforgettable.
