Obituary of Louis Nathan Rothberg

Louis N. Rothberg, age 83, died peacefully at home on March 18, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was the owner and president of L.N. Rothberg & Son, Inc., Middlesex, NJ. Mr. Rothberg graduated from Plainfield High School in 1944 and immediately thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving on an LST. He saw action in Okinawa and won two battle stars, a Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.He founded his excavating - paving business in 1948, establishing a reputation for high quality and dependable work. Along with his love for his business and family Louis enjoyed playing scrabble, cards and watching the NY Yankees.Surviving are his beloved wife of 54 years, Susan Prowell Rothberg, his son John Rothberg and wife Meg of Bound Brook; four daughters Jill Patry and husband Richard of Groveton, NH; Jane Rothberg of Bedminster; Katie Gifford of Galloway and Karen Assise and her husband Jerry of Bridgewater; six grandchildren Amy, Jack and Molly Rothberg, Amanda and Elizabeth Gifford and Kimberlee Van Houten-Assise. Also surviving are his sister Anne C. Reed of Princeton and two brothers Dr. Harvey Rothberg of Princeton and John Charles Rothberg of Madison, VA. as well as many nieces and nephews.Mr. Rothberg was predeceased by his parents Helen and Harvey Rothberg and a sister Nancylee Pierson. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and employees.Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1-4 & 7-9 p.m. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Vitas Hospice, One Meridan Road, Suite 5, Eatontown, NJ 07724 or Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills, 200 Mt.
