Obituary of Kathleen Shirley Burris
Kathleen Shirley Burris, age 83, died on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at her home in Gillette. She was born in Winnipeg, Canada and had lived in Chicago, Milwaukee, Evanston, IL, and Schenectady and Albany, NY, before moving to NJ.Mrs. Burris received her BA from Loyola University in Chicago and her RN from Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing. She began her career as a Registered Nurse. She was owner and operator of Shirley Burris Interiors in Chicago, and later was chef and co-owner (with her husband) of The Almshouse Inn in Ghent, NY. She retired as the Assistant Director of Prevention of the NY State Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse in 1991.She was a member of Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, NY. Mrs. Burris is survived by her husband, B. Cullen Burris, M.D.; her son, Scott Cullen Burris and his wife, Margaret Lee of Narberth; her daughter, Anne Steel Burris and her husband, David Lucas of Gillette; her brother, William Edward Beattie of London, Ontario and her two grandchildren, Haesun Burris-Lee and Hejin Burris-Lee.Friends are invited to celebrate her life with the family on Saturday, September 12, at 3 p.m. in her daughter's home at 765 Long Hill Road, Gillette, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills - Hospice Program, 200 Mt. Airy Road, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920. Arrangements are under the direction of Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung, NJ.
