Dearest Shelley, Barry, Ian, Wesley, Elana and your extended families,
We are saddened and shocked that such a fantastic woman as Melissa (or "EM" as you lovingly called her) passed away at the very young age of 33. She had so much to live for and so much to give those she knew and loved. As Alisa and Joanne have said, Shelley, Barry and Melissa have been family friends since the children were toddlers. Alisa is only 5 weeks older than Melissa. They were like sisters, part of a 5 family Shabbat dinner group that met monthly for many years. I am sure all of the families share our sentiments. I am brought to tears when I think back to all of the simchas we all shared as the children grew up. We remember vividly Melissa's Bat Mitzvah not so many years ago. It has been wonderful sharing her accomplishments with Shelley and Barry. How happy and proud she made them. Since my niece was married the same weekend(in Florida), Alisa was our representative at Ian and Melissa's wedding. We were fortunate to be able to visit and meet the children when the family came to Potomac. What a beautiful family ! May Melissa's memory be for a blessing! We will certainly miss her. We are here for the family.
All our love at this difficult time and always...Karen and Harry

It feels surreal, Shelly and Barry I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Melissa. She was a wonderful and caring person and mother. I enjoyed seeing her recently at Shelly’s retirement party where she, Ian and the kids were having so much fun! Such a cute family. I will always remember her smile and laugh growing up with her as another older sister! Friday night dinners especially at the old house in Kensington, with Barnum the dog! I loved that dog to death Also have memories of her and my sister hanging out and the few rare chances besides the Friday night dinners that I was able to be hang out with her she was amazing and wonderful person.. It feels surreal, horrifying. Melissa, you were taken from us much too soon...so full of love and life...with so much to give. We will always remember your smile, your laugh, your warmth, the way you gave of yourself to everyone around you. The world is so much poorer a place without you.
From the old days, I especially remember how you and Andy grew up side by side, and visits to the old house in Kensington, and Barnum and Chelsea. From recent visits, I cherish seeing you as a loving mother to your own dear children, Wesley and Elana. So desperately sad for them and for Ian. How tragic for your mother and father and the rest of your family. How devastating for all of us who knew and loved you.
God bless you among the holies.
May God bless everyone among the mourners of Zion.
We will never forget you, Melissa.

Melissa will forever be my little sister.
I remember her in diapers as clearly as I remember going to look at wedding dresses with her. I taught her how to ride a bike. She stayed in my dorm room when I graduated from college. I spent many summers at her house when I was working with Barry and Shelley, and like siblings sometimes I would annoy the hell out of her.
Everyone who didn't know me at my Brother Lance's wedding thought she was his younger sister, until she pointed out that the girl in leather was.
I remember Ari and I visiting her in her dorm room at Cook. We both expected her to be a little homesick, instead she was as comfortable and relaxed as a junior. You'd never know she'd only been at college a couple of weeks. Her independence astonished us.
We were married a year apart. One of the most beautiful pictures from my wedding is her and Ian showing Melissa's engagement ring to Aunt Norma.
When Wesley was born I went to visit her. I laughed when I saw her feeding Wesley and watching Law & Order, something I spent two months doing a year and half earlier. We both could recite the prime-time schedule on TNT by heart.
When Alexander was 3 he thought Aunt Melissa was the coolest because she knew all the words to Ram Sam Sam by heart (something his Mother did not know until Melissa and Ian burned the music together CD for her). He asked from them to come back over and play everyday for weeks after that.
I have thousands of these moments from life I could share, and I'll be thinking about them all.

I first met Melissa as a tiny tot in a stroller. She had accompanied her parents to a professional meeting in Tucson, AZ and managed to endear herself to all who met her. I followed her growth and development through my friendship with her mother, Shelly, who would proudly update me on what "the kid" was up to when we met at annual meetings of MLA or AAHSL. Throughout her journey through high school, college, career, marriage and family, she was the apple of her parents eye and the joy of their lives. I was privileged that she became a vicarious part of my life. My fond memories and prayers are with you.
