Obituary of Elizabeth Jones Carter
Elizabeth Jones Carter, age 82 died on Saturday May 15, 2010 at Overlook Hospital in Summit NJ. Mrs. Carter was born in Cameron, SC and had been a long time resident of Plainfield until her retirement in 1994.
Mrs. Carter had received a bachelor's degree from West Virginia State and later earned her Masters in Education from Trenton State College. She was a charter member of the Theta Phi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Mrs. Carter began her teaching career at the Campbell School in Metuchen where she was the first African American teacher in that school system. She taught in the Plainfield school system for over 30 years at Woodland and Maxson Schools.
She loved reading, especially mystery novels and also enjoyed gardening.
Her brother Boston Jones predeceased her in 1998.
She is survived by a son Charles T. Carter, Jr. and his wife Deborah; a daughter Margaret Farinella and her husband Ted; four sisters Abigail Hardy, Marian Roberts, Mary Armstrong and Marie Lattimore. She is also survived by one grandchild Charlie Farinella.
A Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday May 19, 2010 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Plainfield followed by the interment at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains NJ.
