Obituary of Dorris Mackie
Dorris "Gert" Mackie entered eternal life Thursday, December 9, 2010. She was born October 7, 1928 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, daughter of the late Jewell and Linna Dearing, predeceased by a brother and three sisters. Gert attended Mississippi State University and served in the Navy, where she met her husband, the late Edward Mackie. They settled in Martinsville in 1957 to raise their family. Passionate about learning and education, she worked in the Special Education department of the Bridgewater-Raritan School district for many years.
She is survived by a son, Bruce Mackie and his wife Martha of Oldwick, a daughter Virginia Gail and her husband Michael of North Plainfield, a daughter Karen Lammers and her husband Daniel of Redding, California, a daughter Donna Blocher and her husband Daniel of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and a daughter Debra Rebman and her husband Joseph of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. She was predeceased by a son, Glenn Mackie. Gert was also the proud grandmother of Edward, Katya, Annalise, Darlene, Nathan and Lukas.
Gert had been a proud member of the American Association of University Women and a very active member of the Martinsville United Methodist Church. Her great joys were reading, crossword puzzles, music, and being involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 14th at 10:00 a.m. at the Martinsville United Methodist Church followed by interment at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains. Visitation will be on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung. Memorial contributions may be made to the Martinsville United Methodist Church, 1949 Washington Valley Road, Martinsville 08836-2012.
