Obituary of John M Tierney
John M. Tierney, age 85, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. He was born and raised in Plainfield and has resided in Middlesex since 1961.
John attended Plainfield High School and then went on to earn a sport scholarship from Lafayette College in PA for basketball, football and baseball.
Mr. Tierney served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Middlesex American Legion and a charter member of the Middlesex Elks.
John taught sixth grade and history at Valley View Middle School in Watchung for 39 years, retiring in 1992. John began his officiating career in 1947 and continued officiating for over fifty years.
He was an avid poetry reader and admirable gardener.
He is predeceased by his wife, Patricia in 2001.
Surviving are his children; Mary-Scott Stockton and her husband, Mark, John M. Tierney III and Elizabeth Tierney; his grandsons, John and Mark Stockton, his niece, Joanne Mealia, and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd, Watchung followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Resurrection at Our Lady of Mt. Virgin RC Church in Middlesex. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation will be on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
