Obituary of John William Blackadar
Watchung: John William Blackadar, Sr., 84, died Friday May 6, 2011 at his home in Watchung. Born in Plainfield, he resided in Watchung his entire life.
Prior to retiring in 1991, Mr. Blackadar was the owner and operator of Blackadar Heating, Inc that he started in 1950.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and attended Gould Academy. John belonged to the First Park Baptist Church until as a teenager he became a member of the Wilson Memorial Church Choir and Couples Club. He was a Deacon at Kettle's Church on Lake Muskoka in Canada. He also built tennis facilities and a boardwalk at Ocean Resorts in Florida.
In Watchung John was active in the Optimists Club, their D.A.R.E. program, was a board member at the Watchung Hills Bank and served on the Watchung Fire Department since high school. He also has a recreational field named in his honor in Watchung.
He was active in tennis in NJ, Canada and Florida and enjoyed listening to country music.
Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Titus Blackadar, two sons, John W. and his wife Patricia, Jeffery S. and his wife Christine, a daughter Lynda; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at 10am at Wilson Memorial Union Church in Watchung followed by interment at Springdale United Methodist Church Cemetery in Warren. Visitation Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9pm at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung.
